Anne Frank was a German-Jewish teenager who was forced to go into hiding during the Holocaust. She and her family, along with four others, spent 25 months during World War II in an annex of rooms above her father’s office in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. After being betrayed to the Nazis, Anne, her family, and the others living with them were arrested and deported to Nazi concentration camps. In March of 1945, nine months after she was arrested, Anne Frank died of typhus at Bergen-Belsen. She was fifteen years old. Her diary, saved during the war by one of the family’s helpers, Miep Gies, was first published in 1947. Today, her diary has been translated into 67 languages and is one of the most widely read books in the world.

July 11, 1942 Anne Frank wrote in her diary: "Daddy, Mummy and Margot can't get used to the sound of the Westertoren clock yet, which telles us the time every quarter of an hour. I can. I loved it from the start, and especially in the night it's like a faithful friend." Sounds of the Church Sounds of the Church

February 12, 1944 Anne Frank wrote in her diary: “The sun is shining, the sky deep blue, there’s a magnificent breeze, and I’m longing – really longing for everything: conversation, freedom, friends, being alone.”

Anne Frank often looked from the attic window at the chestnut tree behind the secret annex. She wrote about it in her diary. Now, the more than 150 year old tree is diseased, but online it will live on. Leave your leaf in the virtual chestnut tree, forward it and keep Anne Frank’s ideals alive. Anne’s Tree Anne’s Tree

Anne Frank was in hiding in the secret annex for over two years. During the day she had to be very quiet and she could never go outside. She yearned for freedom. Anne wanted to be useful to others after the war. Not only to the people around her, but also to people she did not know. Anne did not survive the Holocaust but her diary has inspired millions of people all over the world to do their best for a better world. Anne’s wish came true after all. With your leaf you can show that you too have been inspired by the diary of Anne Frank.
