1. What does this word mean? 2. (HINT: A disease can colonize on a human being and make that person sick.) 3. Colonize – settle or establish a colony 4. Colony – a group of people who settle far from home but maintain ties with their homeland

1. Many Europeans came to the Americas with high hopes to make more money and have a better life. 2. Think of it like a parent or guardian moving your family to a different state in order to have a better paying job. 3. In the 1600s, many people became successful after moving to the Americas. 4. Do you think that people feel that way today when they move to America?

1. Many Europeans came to colonize but the British were the first to control and colonize what we know as the eastern coast of the United States. 2. Do you think the British encountered any other people in what we know as the United States today? 3. The Native Americans were actually present before the British.

1. The Native Americans helped the English settlers find food and build shelters. 2. The First Thanksgiving holiday was spent between the English settlers and the Native Americans!

1. From about 1600 to about 1730, the British colonized the land from present day New Hampshire all the way down to present day Georgia. 2. The Native Americans slowly moved west. Some were forced and some left willingly.

1. Today, we have a country with a lot of ancestors from England (where the British came from) and also many other countries. 2. The United States of America would not exist without the help of the British and, as time continued, countless other countries.

You are going to imagine that you have lived in the America’s for 10 years. You are now a successful farmer making a lot of money! You are going to create a postcard to send back to your family in England. Tell them how you are and draw a picture of your farm or the new town. Be creative and have fun!
