I will justify with my team in a paragraph whether a creative idea obeys energy flows or matter cycles concepts. WARMUP: Turn in Salmon colored project sheets to the appropriate basket. NO NOTEBOOKS TODAY.

This week:  Thursday – practice speeches for class – ready or not.  Take yellow speech reminder form if desired  Friday – ONLY day or research for Spring project.  Portland Science Fair blue permission forms due Friday.

Tomorrow – Robert Frost  Have your boards here – Mr. Jamsa will take to fair.  Come for an hour between 4:30 – 7:30 or at your presentation time.  Your board will be in the mezzanine at speech time.

Days Until First Checkpoint - Eight  Friday is the only planned research day in class.  Find time to watch films – visit web sites.  Find a place to record research  Video folks – what problem do you want to solve? Research it

Today:  Read the following descriptions.  Write down whether they are possible or not.  Explain your answer in three to four complete sentences.  Remember to use the concepts of MATTER CYCLES and ENERGY FLOWS.  In a cycle, all of the material can be used over and over again.  In ENERGY FLOWS, when energy transforms from one form to another, usually during a transformation, some of the energy converts to thermal energy.

Round by Round   Team works together, debriefing   Team works together   On your own, start to finish

Problem One  An electric motor converts electrical energy to mechanical energy. A generator converts mechanical energy into electrical energy. Can you connect an electric motor to a generator, and so they would supply energy to each other and run forever?

Problem Two:   Is it possible to find a planet that has a greater mass of herbivores than it has of plants? For example, 1000 zebra and 10 stalks of corn.

Problem Three:  Water is a problem in the desert, so Handy Solutions, Inc. developed the never dry suit. All water from the skin is caught as it evaporates, water vapor from the mouth is captured, and even urine is caught and distilled. One great glass of water can last months!

Problem Four  A light connected to a solar cell. All the light from the light bulb shines on the solar cell, which makes electricity that goes into the light bulb, which lights the light bulb, and the light shines on the solar cell, and so on.

Problem Five  Kids jumping around in their sneakers could create energy. Put transformers in the souls of shoes and convert the kinetic energy of jumping into electrical energy which could be used to power an ipod or cell phone. Possible?
