Pushing them to a bright future We know that education is the best way to achieve that We aim to give them a good basis to perform well in their life But.... What happens if we forget that our main goal is not just that?
2
Proud of our little... I will try to show you how we have rethought a SF We knew we were cute when we were quiet The key point was not in us, was in our mentors and teachers Yes, "Proud of our little..." grown up student who will be full member citizen in a while
3
We learn fast... We demonstrated our abilities, potential, thrill doing research But we knew that we could do something bigger We asked for some help and our teachers make us think the Science Fair as a Science Project Playing in the big leagues
4
...but everything was new We were aware of what kind of science fairs we could find in Spain and in The World We started getting in touch with INICE We created our own regional fair after open a delegation of INICE in Catalonia We discovered we were just pasionate kids: Dealing with reality, dealing with interests The first EXPORECERCA JOVE
5
Accepting the truth Everyone has in mind the duality between being a kid and being an adult. But not everyone accepts that is a diffuse line. Why we want them to discover a new drug, theorem or catalyzer if we do not allow them to manage a budget or deal with politicians or Media We were kids for kids. Showing to our friends we were altruist. Now the wheel's still in spin
6
Confidence Why we went everywhere in couples? We were shy, timid, inexperienced, but we were never alone The first decision was to create a structure based on committees so every one could say a word The second decision was that any duty could be done just by one member Rotate responsabilities doing a chain. ab -> bc -> cd -> etc
7
Polit(ic)eness Ask a single great scientist who never had to negotiate with politicians We are educated, so we are prepared to be in the real world We do mistakes...they do mistakes too! To be an adult does not mean to be evil
8
Scaling up
9
Media not always took us seriously Our weakness was commucating what make us different We had to ask to every adult involved to use their contacts and connection Sometimes, our spokesperson is 14 years old! Combine profiles and ages Always ask, ask and ask again
10
If you don't have money...
11
......please, try going to work with a big smile! 12 years after the first MAGMA's deliberative assemblies we're the biggest spanish fair We have MAGMA-like associations in other regions where research projects are not in the students curricula. 2012 is the first year Spain will present a science project to the biggest and most prestigious science fair in the World, the Intel ISEF Our ideal: If you can do a research, you can organize a research fair T his is our "Kids for kids" model. We started as 11 students from 13 to 17 years old with the help of a couple of teachers of the Narcís Monturiol Secondary School who believed in our will and gave their time and knowledge (and legal signature) to initiate our association.
