Think about your implementation plan. In what ways would you like for it to be modified? Where are we? Where do we want to go? How are we going to get there? Now what?

Where are we? Just completed initial training Draft Implementation plan Materials – MCC 4 th ed, PD toolkit, 99 Ideas, Coaching, WIDA 2012 Ready to start initial implementation Now what?

Where do we want to go? Deeper understanding of the SIOP model through application of the components and their features with reflective analysis Ongoing support and continuing PD Know our students! Culturally responsive teaching through SIOP leads to students’ increased academic language Increased understanding of needs of ELLs Begin Program Evaluation Data collection Now what?

How are we going to get there? THE SIOP MODEL

Ideas for Implementation: USE IT! Feel confident to try! Study Groups/PLCs/TLCs SIOP Training Workshops Co-planning/ Co-teaching Culturally Responsive Teaching Demonstration Lessons Coaching/Mentoring Focused Class Visits/Peer Observations SIPs The ELL Support Team Structured Discussions (Quarterly Conversations, book study, online forums)

Training and Support for….. Teachers Content ESL Administrators School Counselors Coaches Site / District Peer / Practiced veteran

Professional Learning Communities Teachers meet to explore the SIOP Model. Small group Book study Regular meeting Planned agenda

What Teachers Accomplish in Study Groups/PLCs Examine teaching strategies Share success and celebrate small steps of progress Explore areas for improvement Explore and realize beliefs and biases about students Analyze willingness and success in improving teaching and learning

SIOP Workshops Explain SIOP component and features Share strategies Celebrate successes Foster collaboration

Co-planning Plan instruction together The focus of planning is student-centered and culturally responsive Write lesson plans and objectives together Link content concepts across the curriculum ESL teacher + content teacher Content teacher + content teacher Grade level teachers

Co-teaching Teachers plan a lesson together and share responsibilities of lesson delivery Content teacher + ESL teacher Content teacher + coach

Demonstration Lessons A coach or “practiced teacher” demonstrates a specific SIOP feature Builds familiarity and comfort with SIOP

Coaching A coach observes a SIOP class and provides feedback in a debrief session. Coaching is supportive in nature. Provide objectivity in the data observed. The person being coached evaluates his/her own performance. What I hear, I forget: What I see, I remember: What I do, I understand. - Old Chinese proverb

Focused Class Visit Peer: observes previously identified aspect(s) of colleague’s class records observational data debriefs in post conference

Reflections Audiotape / videotape yourself and rate yourself using the SIOP protocol. Keep a journal of your implementation of the SIOP Model

Coaching Time Supports Administrators must schedule coaching at convenient times; ideally during the school day. Protected planning periods After-school meetings Release time for peer observations
