Jesus and competition: Matt 20- 25 Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 26 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 27 and whoever wants to be first must be your slave— 28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
32
Jesus and competition: Luke 9:46 An argument started among the disciples as to which of them would be the greatest. 47 Jesus, knowing their thoughts, took a little child and had him stand beside him. 48 Then he said to them, “Whoever welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. For it is the one who is least among you all who is the greatest.”
33
Jesus and competition: Matt. 9: 35 Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, “Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all.”

Listen to this guy’s story: My first job was working in an orange juice factory, but I got canned because I couldn’t concentrate. Then I worked in the woods as a lumberjack, but I just couldn’t hack it, so they gave me the axe. After that I tried to be a tailor, but I just wasn’t suited for it. Mainly because it was a so-so job. Next I tried working in a muffler factory but that was exhausting. I wanted to be a barber, but I just couldn’t cut it. I attempted to be a deli worker, but any way I sliced it, I just couldn’t cut the mustard.
53
Listen to this guy’s story: I studied a long time to become a doctor, but I didn’t have any patients. I became a professional fisherman, but discovered that I couldn’t live on my net income. I managed to get a good job working for a pool maintenance company, but the work was just too draining. Next, I found being an electrician interesting, but the work was shocking. After many years of trying to find steady work I finally got a job as a historian until I realized there was no future in it.
55
APPLICATION: 1. If God has created us for work and he’s values our work then work can be used to glorify and worship God.
56
APPLICATION: 2. When we work for the glory of God and not our own personal glory or for the satisfaction of someone else we can rediscover the joy of our work.
57
APPLICATION: 3. Some people will never find the right job because they approach work with the wrong perspective. When we discover this biblical motive for work we can discover the fulfillment our work should provide.
58
APPLICATION: 4.When we work for an eternal inheritance we change from seeing our efforts from a short term to a long term. When we work for the worship of God we work for an eternal reward.

Paul David Tripp, Forever: Why You Can't Live Without It "Our world isn't a very good amusement park. No, it's a broken place groaning for redemption. Here is meant to make us long for forever. Here is meant to prepare us for eternity."
