Grant Agreement number: 265392 Project Acronym: USEmobility Project title: Understanding Social behaviour for Eco-friendly multimodal mobility Funding Scheme: Coordination and Support Action (Supporting) Project starting date: 01.01.2011 Project duration: 26 months Deliverable D2.3. (Selection of Regions) Lead partner for deliverable: European Passengers’ Federation Dissemination level: Public Name of the document: USEmobility_Report_2.3.

EXCELDATEIPFAD.xls Key Findings Regions or lines with a regional rail as backbone and with a recent passenger increase are selected to investigate further upon Region selection Use for USEmobility Need for USEmobility Management Summary 10 different regions are selected which will form the pool in which swing users and their motivations will be identified A first overview and characteristics of the selected regions are established to be further analysed in order to identify factors and further on develop scenario’s 2 Implication for USEmobility

EXCELDATEIPFAD.xls 1. Selection process 2. List of selected regions 3. Overview of selected regions Overview 3

4 Selection process Choice of regions based on different criteria influencing behavioural change towards eco-friendly multimodal mobility in two step process As primary criteria geographical spread and data availability was used Criteria divided in general and specific criteria Regional rail Swing users in daily travel Mix of regions General criteria Relative passenger increase Absolute passenger increase Hints for successful concepts Size of sample Recentness of major increase Specific criteria

8 Overview of selected regions 1. Metronom Hanse Netz is the regional rail transport between Hamburg and Bremen and Hamburg and Uelzen in Northern Germany Plausible incentives for swing users a new timetable (travelling between Hamburg and Bremen every 30 minutes) a different stopping pattern the average punctuality has risen up to up to 95% the speed increase from 140 to 160km/h Capacity and comfort increase Commuters with a yearly ticket have the possibility to reserve a fixed seat (Stammplatz in German). 2. The Salzburg S-Bahn provides regional rail services in and around Salzburg with a cross-country co-operation Austria-Germany Plausible incentives for swing users New trains with more comfort (air condition, barrier-free, etc.) Extension of infrastructure with well-chosen new stops Increase of frequency Cross-country co-operation doesn’t seem to be a negative factor for growth

9 Overview of selected regions 3. The Steiermark S-Bahn provides regional rail services in and around Graz, the capital city of the federal state Steiermark in Austria Plausible incentives for swing users New rolling stock with more comfort Increase of frequency in two steps 4. The Breisgau S-Bahn is situated around Freiburg in the southwest of Germany. It started in 1997 running the track between Freiburg Main Station and Breisach and extended services in 2002 operating also from Freiburg Main Station to Elzach. They are surrounded with north-west Slovenia and south-west Hungary (Zala County).. Over the last 5 to 10 years, the Varazdin- Medjimurje area is having a decline in railway users. Plausible incentives for swing users no major improvement has been made to the infrastructure Information systems on the railways for the passengers do not exist Most of the traffic is aggregated near county capitals during peak hours The buses and trains in the local transportation system are rather old

11 7. Zagreb is the capital and largest city of Croatia. About 20 kilometers to the west is the border with Slovenia. The situation in the public transport has known some ups and down in the last 20 years. Plausible incentives for swing users Trains are not adapted to their role as regional or urban trains no major investments in rolling stock from train and bus operators information to the passengers is of a low quality Overview of selected regions 8. The Brussels capital region consists of 19 communes with a very high population density of 7004 inhabitants per square km. The STIB is the main public transport company in Brussels.
