Warm Up! 1. What do you think acid rain is? 2. Draw and label the four symbols for fronts
2
pH and Acid Rain Objective: SWBAT describe the effects of acid rain on the biosphere. HW/Reminders: Start studying for your TEST FRIDAY! Agenda: Warm Up Objective Acid Rain Notes Video Review- tic tac toe & weather station practice
3
What is Acid Rain Formed when gases, such as CO 2 and SO 2 react with the water in the atmosphere The pH of Rain drops As low as pH of 2 Very harmful to our living environment living environment http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HE6Y0iEuXMQ

Activity 1.Fold your paper in half. 2.Fold your paper in half again. 3.Now unfold your paper. Label the top of each section with the following title. 1.pH Scale 2.Acid Rain Formation 3.Effects of Acid Rain. 4.Solutions
5
pH and Acid Rain Draw a picture of the pH scale and include an example of an item that would exist at each part of the scale. Use red to indicate acid, blue for base, and brown for neutral. Draw a diagram of how acid rain forms, make sure you label and include details of its formation. Include a description of sources of acid rain that include both manmade sources and natural sources. Describe the effects of acid precipitation on: aquatic life and vegetation Humans and stone and metals. List 3 solutions that can be implemented to help prevent acid precipitation.
6
Industrial acid rain is a substantial problem in China, Eastern Europe and Russia and areas down-wind from them. Acid rain from power plants in the Midwest United States has also harmed the forests of upstate New York and New England. This shows that the effects of acid rain can spread over a large area, far from the source of the pollution ACID RAIN in the U.S.

Acid Rain: Invisible Menace http://channel.nationalgeographic.com/channel/videos/acid- rain-invisible-menace/embed/ http://channel.nationalgeographic.com/channel/videos/acid- rain-invisible-menace/embed/ http://channel.nationalgeographic.com/channel/videos/acid- rain-invisible-menace/embed/ What is happening in the Smokey Mountains due to acid rain? What can we do to prevent this?
9
Exit Ticket 1.What is the main cause of acid rain? 1.What are 2 effects of acid rain? 1.What can we do to help the problem of acid rain?
10
pH pH describes how acidic or basic a solution is.
11
pH scale
12
0-7 = Acid 7 = Neutral 7-14 = Base
13
ACID RAIN
14
Natural vs. Manmade Natural sources include forest fires, volcanoes, lightning Man-made sources include industrial factories, car emissions, and coal- and oil-fired power plants (electricity from burning fossil fuels) The #1 cause of acid rain is from human activity SOURCES OF ACID RAIN
15
Harmful to aquatic life and vegetation Increased acidity in bodies of water Increased acidity in soil Harmful to human health Respiratory problems, asthma, dry coughs, headaches and throat irritations Harmful to stone and metal Weathering of statues and buildings is accelerated EFFECTS OF ACID RAIN
16
WHAT CAN WE DO? Reduce amount of carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide and oxides of nitrogen released into the atmosphere Use less energy (hence less fuel burnt) Use cleaner fuels Coal that contains less sulfur "Washing" the coal to reduce sulfur content Natural Gas Bio-fuel Use other sources of electricity (i.e. nuclear power, hydro- electricity, wind energy, and solar energy)
