Sunflowers and Rain Sunflowers and Acid Rain Talent 21 Project By Ryan Creamer Date 5/4/12 Period 3

Introduction  The purpose of this experiment was to find out If the acid rain will affect the seed  The control in this experiment was Tap water  The variable in this experiment was the vinegar water

Materials  Plastic cup  super growing pellets  Triple beam balance scale  Sunflower seeds  10% vinegar water  Ruler  Data sheet  Meow

Methods 1. Add super growing pellets to cup. 2. Add 3 tablespoons of water to expand. 3. Plant 3 seeds per cup. 4. Weigh cup on triple beam balance. Record weight. 5. Add tap water or vinegar water to cup. Weigh again and record data. 6. Cup will be placed under grow light. 7. Observe the container daily and note any indications of growth(by observations and measurement) and compare to other containers in the experiment. While observing indicate any special care given to the plant. (Did you need to add more or less water? Did you need to rotate the plant?) 8. Record observations, measurements, and comments in the plant growth diary. Once the plant begins to grow, you will need to draw a detailed picture of the plant including the appearance of leaves and stems. 9. Each day, repeat steps 3 through 8.

Scientific MethodScientific Method  Ask a Question  State Your Hypothesis  Identify Control & Variable  Test Your Hypothesis  Collect & Record Your Data  Interpret Your Data  State Your Conclusion

Ask a QuestionAsk a Question  The purpose of this experiment was to find out if the seed will grow the same if it used acid rain  Your question: Will the plant grow from the acid rain as it did with the tap water

State Your HypothesisState Your Hypothesis  If I plant a sunflower seed I expect it to not grow/kill the plant. I expected that because we are using the vinegar water on the plant and I think the vinegar will make it so that the plant shrivels up and dies.

Identify Control & VariableIdentify Control & Variable  Control is the people who used tap water and the variable is the people who used the water with the 10% vinegar.

Test Your HypothesisTest Your Hypothesis  If I add vinegar water to my sunflower seed, then it Killed the plant because the acid from the vinegar was to strong for the plant to grow.

Collect & Record Your DataCollect & Record Your Data

Interpret Your DataInterpret Your Data  The results showed that the plant did not grow.  As part of this experiment there may have been variables or scientific errors that could have affected the growth of the plants and the outcome of this experiment. The variables affecting the results may have been the reason my plant didn’t grow. Scientific errors that could have occurred and affected the results include over watering the plant which made it grow mold onto the plant.

State Your ConclusionState Your Conclusion  The results of this lab support the initial hypothesis that the plant would die because the water would kill it. Some things that were learned from this experiment were that acid rain can really affect the environment. This experiment could be extended in the future by trying different plants and give it more time to test it.
