4 Technology and Your Future (1)
"The number one benefit of information technology is that it empowers people to do what they want to do. It lets people be creative. It lets people be productive. It lets people learn things they didn't think they could learn before, and so in a sense it is all about potential." - Steve Ballmer, former CEO of Microsoft

5 Technology and Your Future (2)
"… everything we called the 'IT revolution' over these past 20 years was just the warm-up act. It was just the sharpening and distribution of the tools of horizontal collaboration. Now you are going to see the real IT revolution." - Carly Fiorina, former CEO of HP

17 How We Are Different/Unique (1)
Small classes taught mostly by full-time faculty No classes taught by grad students Teaching is in SUNY Poly’s DNA Faculty has a great diversity of interests and professional accomplishments We work hard to blend theory and application All of our students learn to program Helps develop thinking/logic/problem solving Enables many more opportunities for our grads Huge demand

18 How We Are Different/Unique (2)
We have deliberately built-in some strategic overlap in our programs during the first 3 semesters which allows easy movement between our programs/majors We realize it’s hard to select a major The average US college student changes majors 3 times Movement between our programs during the first few semesters will not delay graduation

19 How We Are Different/Unique (3)
Accelerated BS/MS Program in CS and NCS Get both a Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree in Computer and Information Science or Network and Computer Security in 5 years Overlap of 12 credit hours during senior year Students in the BS/MS Program must maintain a 3.0 in all courses and in the major

20 How We Are Different/Unique (4)
$1.5B “Quad C” (Computer Chip Commercialization Center) Will employ 500 people Completing it now… move-in this year Future construction “in the works”: $45B chip fabrication center that would employ 5,000 people The proposed site is on SUNY Poly’s property

21 How We Are Different/Unique (5)
Close proximity to Rome Air Force Research Lab (AFRL) Many “high tech” companies support AFRL Many AFRL and “high tech” company employees are SUNY Poly alumni Internship opportunities Other large companies in the area promote internships and employ our graduates… here are a few: Bank of NY Mellon, The Hartford Insurance, Met Life Northern Safety, National Grid, several hospitals Turning Stone Casino, several colleges

22 How We Are Different/Unique (6)
Mohawk Valley Consortium Full-time students may take one course a semester at partner institutions (Hamilton College, Utica College, Morrisville, Empire State, MVCC, HCCC) at no added tuition cost You can take some classes at Hamilton College, one of the best liberal arts colleges in the country, and pay SUNY Poly’s tuition We have merged with SUNY College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (CNSE)

23 Accreditation / Center of Excellence Designation
We are accredited by Middles States Commission on Higher Education Same body accredits RPI, RIT, SU, Cornell, etc… We are seeking additional ABET Accreditation Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology ABET Consultant was on-campus last year We are seeking NSA designation as a Center of Excellence in Information Assurance Education

24 Recent Accomplishments
NCS Club placed 2nd in recent Regional National Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition Beat schools like Syracuse University, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, SUNY Albany, University of Maine, University of Massachusetts Amherst, U.S. Military Academy at West Point, etc… We continue to compete with and beat larger schools We are hosting the next Regional National Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition in Spring 2016

25 New Initiatives Working with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
This will allow us to perform “real world” network penetration testing to identify and fix security issues Win/Win for SUNY Poly students and EPA No other school in the country is working with EPA IT security We plan to expand upon this and offer our services to other businesses/organizations Again, a "win/win" for businesses/organizations and our students

26 After This Presentation
We have current students and department faculty available for you in Kunsela Café and Kunsela Lobby Current students have demonstrations and can tell you about their experiences at SUNY Poly Talk to faculty members about their courses, research, and consulting Current faculty will provide tours of some of our labs
