CIGRE Study Committee B5 Colloquium, Calgary 14-16 September 2005 Non Distance Protection PART 3 Current differential & Directional Comparison relays are little affected by series compensation Potential a problem for Current Differential relay for long UHV lines where charging current is too high Directional Comparison might be a better choice in such case Cross Differential protection relay for double circuit lines is not effected by series compensation and does not require communication link
3
CIGRE Study Committee B5 Colloquium, Calgary 14-16 September 2005 Comparison of electric quantities between the double lines Similar no fault, or external fault Difference internal fault Cross Differential Relay Combination of two types of cross differential relay elements: Current-balanced relay (CBR) Directional transverse differential relay (DTR)
4
CIGRE Study Committee B5 Colloquium, Calgary 14-16 September 2005 Performance of Cross differential relay Tests conducted at China EPRI show » The relay is able to offer fast response for all fault types within the instant protected zone, which is about 90% of the total line length. » The relay is able to successively trip for all types of remote in zone fault outside the instant protected zone after remote CB operates. » The relay is able to clear high resistance fault for EHV long lines both instantly and successively. » The relay is able to trip the faulted phase only for evolving faults on both of the two lines.
