What is Endoplasmic Reticulum? Like stairways in a mansion Manufacturing and transporting proteins Connected to the nucleus
3
Smooth ER vs Rough ER ●Rough ER (RER): involved in protein production, protein folding, quality control and dispatch, and studded with ribosomes ●Smooth ER (SER): associated with production of fats and steroid hormones. NOT studded with ribosomes and is associated with smooth fats, has a detoxification function
4
How they work with proteins ●Proteins are put into the ER for transportation throughout the cell ●The ER is also where multimeric proteins (which are proteins that have two or more polypeptide chains) assemble ●provides protein quality control: proteins are kept in the ER until they are corrected ●In some plants, the ER is the site of collection for storage proteins (proteins that store minerals such as potassium and iron) http://www.rsc.org/chemistryworld/News/2007/March/06030702.as p

Why is Endoplasmic Reticulum important? ●Proteins are the building blocks of life ●The endoplasmic reticulum sends the proteins where they need to go ●Without the proteins going to the necessary locations, we would die (along with everything else). In the picture above we have the casual ups man crossing his arms and smiling, we can most likely assume that he just delivered a package.
