Books children read The books we use to teach children to read are books which emulate natural patterned language. Children are expected to have a go at words using the context clues, key words and phonics.

Testing At the end of Year 1 children will be tested on their ability to decode words - known as the phonic screening check. At the end of Year 2 children are tested on their reading fluency and reading comprehension. In addition to this if they didn’t pass the phonic screening check they are required to take it again.

Frequently asked Questions They appear to be making it up and not following the words? How much help should I give my child when they’re reading? Are they ready to stop using a pointing finger? When can they move up a level? But what if they don’t want to read?
