Telecare Awareness

Today’s Session What is Telecare Why we need to consider Telecare How can Telecare be used in Care settings Linking Telecare with Reablement service Case Study Telecare products

What is Telecare? Telecare” sometimes referred to as “Assistive Technology” is a service providing support to people in their own homes, using information and commuication technology. It can be as simple as a telephone call to check if the person is alright or using sensors around the home that react automatically if something goes wrong.

Why consider Telecare Sustained Increases in longevity Better survival in the face of illness, disability or injury The establishment of rights and responsibilities in relation to social care Increased expectations for choice and quality of services Throughout England, 4.85 million unpaid carers

The current system of care and support: unsustainable? There are two main reasons why the current system of care and support, without significant change and new approaches to the delivery of care, is unsustainable in the future: its rising cost and the lack of sufficient human resources to deliver care in the same way as today.

Technology can help Reduce risks in the home or at the care settings. Respond rapidly and appropriately when needed. Assist in the management of specific conditions Enable more people to be discharged in a timely and safe way from hospital care Cut some unnecessary costs from the health and social care system

Putting People First Telecare is central to implementing the government's Putting People First programme of personalising care and intervening earlier.

Falls – the problem Every day in England ….. –8,000 elderly and frail people fall over, 70% at night –6,000 are bruised and shaken but carry on –1,800 are hurt and go to A&E –200 break a hip and 40 die within a year –8 die immediately from their injuries/trauma This happens every single day of the year!

Telecare in Residential/Nursing Care Settings Key benefits to staff/management: Telecare provides additional assistance to staff, helping them feelsupported in their role Increase staff efficiency and free up their time to engage more meaningfully with residents It can enable care home to accept residents with higher care needs. Can open minds to other business opportunities to support residents either in the home or returning them to the community via Reablement and use of Telecare.

Case Study - St Cecilia North Yorkshire County Council and St Cecilia’s a residential home provider for dementia, have trialled the innovative use of Telecare to support people with dementia in a residential setting. The Telecare equipment, provided by Tunstall Healthcare, was trialled from June 09 to August 10 at St Cecilia’s residential home in Scarborough and was found to have an extremely positive effect on residents’ health.

Case Study - St Cecilia Evaluation In this setting the project has shown that Telecare can improve quality of life for residents and staff, maximising independence’ in a residential home for people with dementia. Key outcomes were:- Residents’ supported effectively without limiting their choice, where safe to do so. More efficient use of staff time to deliver quality time with residents. Telecare has been embraced as a standard component of supporting the residents’ best interests when caring in this environment. It was an unexpected outcome that residents’ skin integrity would improve but was a result of reduced contact with urine due to enuresis sensors.

Wireless Nurse Call System – coming out soon Hardwired input & Reassurance LED Surface or flush mount option Emergency or Call select setting on Pear push and PC Cancel at Source

New Development - Wireless Nursecall System What is Nursecall? Tunstall Nursecall is a cost effective, wireless Nursecall communications system which enables Telecare sensors to be used in residential and nursing homes. The use of Telecare sensors, combined with communications technology and tailored support, helps to manage risks and ensure staff are quickly alerted to potential problems.

Nursecall System How does it work? Nursecall is easily installed into residents’ rooms and communal Individual Telecare sensors, including personal pendants, will also raise an alert on the system. When an alert is generated, the CareAssist portable Telecare alarm contacts the appropriate care staff via their simple to use pager receivers. The care staff will receive a clear text page providing the source and type of alarm call. Care staff can then visit the location of the alarm and clear it using the cancel button on the call point. This in turn will automatically send a message to all pagers to advise that the call has been dealt with.

Telecare and the Re-ablement A role beyond Telecare… Telecare fits with the re-ablement approach: Outcomes- focused Individual assessment Promoting independence Monitoring progress Supports a person to live independently at home Supports the assessment period: establishing need Provides the reassurance for family members Better outcomes for the service user

Medication Dispenser Provides an effective solution to support medication compliance and self management Automatically dispensing medication and providing audible and visual alerts to the user each time medication should be taken. If the user fails to access their medication, an alert is raised to the response centre and or the designated Carer Large dispenser Used instead of reminder message To promote compliance and assists self management

Business Case for Telecare Empowerment of service users Quicker diagnosis and referral for care and treatment Better use of Staff time Prevention, and reduction of hospital admissions The glue to a coordinated approach to support people at home or in a care environment.
