1 Log: Aug. 16th List the six step of the Scientific Method, describe one. ( uses / notes if needed)

2 Living Things Have Cells
Section 1 Characteristics of Living Things Chapter 1 Living Things Have Cells All living things are composed of one or more cells. A cell is a membrane-covered structure that contains all of the materials necessary for life. Some organisms are made up of only one cell and some are made up of trillions of cells. In an organism with many cells, different kinds of cells perform specialized functions. Single cell Multi Cell organism

3 Respond to Change and Surroundings
Chapter 1 Respond to Change and Surroundings Homeostasis is the maintenance of a stable internal environment. Heart Beats Faster Breathing Harder But why????

4 Chapter 1 Respond to Change
Section 1 Characteristics of Living Things Chapter 1 Respond to Change A stimulus is anything that causes a reaction or change in an organism or any part of an organism. Responding to External Change Organisms must respond to change in the external environment in order to maintain their homeostasis.

5 The chemicals of Life All cells are made of chemicals
The most abundant are Carbohydrates Proteins Lipids Nucleic acids

6 Chapter 1 Living Things Have DNA
Section 1 Characteristics of Living Things Chapter 1 Living Things Have DNA The cells of all living things contain the molecule deoxyribonucleic acid, or DNA. 1. = deoxyribonucleic acid 2. in every cell 3. specialized molecules which provide instructions for making proteins DNA controls the structure and function of cells. The passing of traits through DNA is called heredity.

7 Organisms make other organisms similar to themselves.
Section 1 Characteristics of Living Things Chapter 2 Reproduction Organisms make other organisms similar to themselves. In sexual reproduction, two parents produce offspring share characteristics of both parents. In asexual reproduction, a single parent produces offspring identical to the parent.

10 Living Things Use Energy
Section 1 Characteristics of Living Things Chapter 2 Living Things Use Energy Organisms use energy to carry out the activities of life. An organism’s metabolism is the total of all of the chemical activities that the organism performs. LOW metabolism High metabolism

11 Living Things Grow and Develop
Section 1 Characteristics of Living Things Chapter 2 Living Things Grow and Develop Development is the process of change All living things, whether they are made of one cell or many cells, grow during periods of their lives. Living things may develop and change as they grow.

12 Homework Page 5-6 Question at the bottom of page
Must answer in complete sentence to get credit for answers The End

13 Log Use time to study Write 5 quiz questions
Star any topic you need help on

14 Log: Aug.17th What are the characteristic of living things?
Hint 6 specific things

15 Cell organization- Made from cells
Made from chemicals of life Use Energy Respond to environment (stimulus/ response) They Develop/ Grow Reproduce

16 Where do living things come from
All living things come from other living things via reproduction Spontaneous Generation is a false theory which states: nonliving things can produce living things

17 Redi’s Experiment Italian Doctor Francesco Redi disproved spontaneous generation This was a controlled experiment Read page 9: what factors were changed?

18 Pasteur’s Experiment

19 Log: Aug 18th What did Reid’s experiment prove. Explain his experiment

20 Log: Aug. 19 Work on paragraphs (Bacteria)

21 Part 2

22 What do Living things need to survive
A. Food 1. all organisms need food for energy & raw materials to perform life processes, build & repair cells

23 Food Heterotrophs Autotrophs a. = eats other organisms for energy
b. humans, deer, lizards Autotrophs a. = make their own food b. plants

24 1. oxygen &/or carbon dioxide
B. Water 1. organisms need water to obtain chemicals from their surrounding Break down food grow Move substances in within their bodies reproduce C. Air 1. oxygen &/or carbon dioxide 2. required in chemical process that releases energy from food

25 Living Space All organisms need a place to live, get food and water and shelter Do to limited space some organisms must compete for space

26 Stable Internal Conditions
Organism must be able to keep their internal systems stable Homeostasis- the maintenance of internal conditions
