5 Excelon Prework Honeywell Building Solution – Global Training Services, Feb. 2006 What is Excelon?

6 Excelon Prework Honeywell Building Solution – Global Training Services, Feb. 2006 Definition Definition: Excelon is a powerful diagnostic tool to examine and troubleshoot Lon networks. In addition to the troubleshooting function, it can also provide a LON protocol analyzer function (license dependent). It can be used to analyze different common Honeywell Systems such as: Open LON networks E-Vision / ZoneManager systems Tema Line Systems Tridium / JACE systems Major Tool-Advantage: Excelon shows all data from the Network without usage of any kind of database or server application (i.e. LNS database or Care database)

7 Excelon Prework Honeywell Building Solution – Global Training Services, Feb. 2006 Major Functions Major Functions include: 1.Browse / scan the LON network 2.Determine actual and average network traffic load 3.Identify devices with anomalies (Automatic Network diagnostics wizard) 4.Documentation of network status (“check Project” function) 5.Save log file for Offline analysis 6.Show existing bindings and binding properties 7.Track traffic with the Protocol Analyzer function

8 Excelon Prework Honeywell Building Solution – Global Training Services, Feb. 2006 Why would I want to… …browse the Lon Network? - Find nodes in LON network and display them in a convenient explorer tree structure - Find all LON nodes in all domains - Evaluate whether or not the principle network design matches the actual installation - Find nodes that are not commissioned or incorrectly commissioned (Ghosts, Zombies) - Online view nv’s of nodes, node properties as well as find existing bindings …determine the actual and average Network traffic load? - Network traffic load can have a significant influence on System performance! - As per the traffic calculation in the CARE 5 LON class, a network is designed not to exceed sustained 75% bandwidth load on a given channel - Possible peak load is 150 messages per second for a TP-FT 10 channel (800 for TP-1250 channel) …identify devices with anomalies? - A single device can have significant influence on total network performance! - The “Automatic Network Diagnostic” wizard provides even inexperienced users a very easy way to get a fundamental overview of the Network performance - It is important to be able to identify devices that i.e. create unusually high traffic load have high error rates Major Functions

9 Excelon Prework Honeywell Building Solution – Global Training Services, Feb. 2006 Why would I want to… …document the network status with the “Check Project” function? - The “Check Project” function provides a quick and easy overview of Network status - After leaving the jobsite, this function provides the opportunity to store documentation of current status. (this might be helpful in case of liability issues/questions at a later time) …save a log file for Offline analysis? - i.e. for documentation purposes - Store Excelon Log file over an extended period of time - Analyze network in a warm and convenient office instead of the jobsite - Provide information for LON expert to do remote diagnosis and troubleshooting …find existing bindings and binding properties? - Identify whether or not the binding tool established the correct bindings - Select a NV and find corresponding bindings and check the NV values online …track traffic with the protocol analyzer? - Extensive possibilities for detailed, in-depth analysis - Tracking messages - Filter function to “hunt” for specific messages, responses etc. Note: During this class we will only show (not explain) the Protocol Analyzer function. There are NO teaching objectives associated with this function. This might be covered in the future by a follow-up workshop specializing in LON troubleshooting. Major Functions

23 Excelon Prework Honeywell Building Solution – Global Training Services, Feb. 2006 Pittfalls - What if Excelon does not connect to the Network ? 1.Perform a diagnostic test. If the diagnostic fails Excelon (and any other software) cannot connect to the Network card. You can Reset the card and force it to Restart. After that reboot your PC. The NI card should work now again and Excelon should be able to connect.

24 Excelon Prework Honeywell Building Solution – Global Training Services, Feb. 2006 Starting with Excelon

25 Excelon Prework Honeywell Building Solution – Global Training Services, Feb. 2006 Starting with Excelon The main screen is divided into 4 panes and a status line: Domain tree (Network tree) NV pane Node pane Protocol pane Status line

26 Excelon Prework Honeywell Building Solution – Global Training Services, Feb. 2006 Domain tree pane - in the Domain (or Network) tree all LON nodes found by the software will show up. - provides an easy overview and the amount of displayed devices can be seen in the status line NV pane - with a right mouse click on a device in the Domain tree, you can select “browse NVs”. These NVs (including their properties) will then show up in the NV pane. - values can be seen and edited whenever applicable - bindings can be found with the “find binding” function Node pane - when using the “automatic network diagnostic” function, nodes (and their properties) will show up in this pane - the “traffic-light” color coding gives a very easy overview to the nodes status Protocol pane - all LON packages are displayed in the protocol pane Status line - a variety of network parameters are displayed in the status line. Therefore, the status line can give a clue as to how high the network quality is. - parameters include: actual traffic load, average traffic load, total number of devices, amount of traffic using alternate path, etc. Starting with Excelon
