Do-Now Match with GO COMPLETE THE DO NOW SILENTLY, INDEPENDENTLY, & IMMEDIATELY DURING REVIEW I WILL ASK FOR VOLUNTEERS TO SOLVE THESE! EVERYONE ELSE PUT A CHECK NEXT TO A RIGHT ANSWER OR CORRECT IT!
2
Objective & Essential Understanding OBJECTIVE: SWBAT state the domain and range of a function and whether a relation is a function, and evaluate a function using the function rule. ESSENTIAL UNDERSTANDING: Relations are sets of paired data on the coordinate plane. Functions are relations where one X is paired with one y. We are entering algebra! Its Very Exciting!
3
What is Domain and Range? Domain is all the X coordinates in a coordinate pair Range is all the Y coordinates in a coordinate pair DomainRange (4, 2) (6, -2) Silently think about the answer & jot down your ideas
4
Test: Which is Which? Domain = X Circle Domain! Range = YUnderline Range! (4, -2) (-1, 0) (9, 2) (-4, -4) (-5, 2) (-6, -7) (5, 4) (8, 3) Silently think about the answer & jot down your ideas
5
Independently: State the Domain & Range 1). (4, -2) Domain: Range: 2). (0, 0) Domain: Range: 3). (-6, -2) Domain: Range: 4). (-1, 3) Domain: Range:
6
State the Domain and Range
7
What is a Function? A function is a relation where each value of the domain (X value) is paired with ONLY ONE value of the range (Y value)
8
Which is a function?
9
Another way of saying this: Each X value can have only one Y value. If it has more than one Y value than it fails the vertical line test (more on this next slide)
10
Another way of saying this:
11
Function Mapping: Draw up a table of Domain and Range and connect them (1, 2) (2, 4) (3, 3) (4, 8) – is this a function? (3, 2) (4, 8) (3, 4) (5, 2) – is this a function?
12
Do Independently Function Mapping: Draw up a table of Domain and Range and connect them (3, 5) (2, 3) (1, 5) (3,0) – is this a function? (1, 4) (2, 2) (3, 2) (4, 8) – is this a function?
