COLLEGE OF COMPUTING, ENGINEERING AND CONSTRUCTION Youngest College – started as College of Computer and Information Sciences in 1983. Added a stand alone BS in Electrical Engineering in 1992. Department of Construction Management joined in 1997. Degrees in Civil and Mechanical Engineering added in 2000-2001. Renamed to College of Computing, Engineering and Construction in 2003. UNF

new, small big Although CCEC is a new, small College, it is a big part of UNF’s STEM activities All degrees in the College are listed as STEM disciplines by the Board of Governors. From Fall 2006 through Summer 2011, the College has awarded 63% of the BS degrees and 48% of the MS degrees in STEM disciplines at UNF. The challenges of STEM education have already been outlined by Dean Hetrick. UNF
5
What is CCEC Doing About STEM Education Outreach BotBall competition High School Outreach Programs Student Retention Moving students into the colleges as soon as possible Student Groups and Peer Mentoring Providing the best programs possible for majors Undergraduate Research programs Strong Departments/ Strong Majors Community Service and TLO Courses UNF
6
Connection to Research Activities Like TLOs, research opportunities provide students with opportunities to engage with real world applications of their education. Through research we: Increase retention of undergraduates; Attract graduate students; Develop our faculty; Increase the University’s prestige; and Bring-in much needed additional resources. UNF
7
Connection to Research Activities Through our Research Experience for Undergraduates Activities (REU) we have introduced students to state-of-the-art applications in computing and engineering. Recently, the University applied for a provisional patent on a sensor routing algorithm that can be applied to both energy management and health monitoring. A student developed parking monitoring system is in the process of being deployed by the University. UNF UNF
8
Connection to Research Activities As a result of our strong curriculum and the hands- on application of knowledge our students gain through REU and TLO experiences, our graduating students get jobs. Between 65% and 85% of our BS Graduates stay in the region. We have UNF CCEC Graduates in almost every technical company in the region. Those students who want to go on for Graduate Education, are admitted to some of the top Universities in the Country, including Auburn, Georgia Tech, the Air Force Academy, the University of Florida, the University of Maryland, the University of Michigan and Yale as well as UNF.
