19 Common sense tests Golden rule: would I want people to do this to me? Mother test: could I explain this to Mum? Conscience test: will I feel guilty afterwards? Consequences test: might I come to regret doing this? Front page/Twittersphere test: how would I feel if my actions were widely broadcast?

20 The six step PLUS process: a framework for resolving ethical dilemmas 1. Define the problem PLUS surface the ethical issues 2. Identify alternative solutions (min 3: best & worst case + as many others as appropriate) 3. Evaluate the alternatives PLUS their ethical impact 4. Make the decision 5. Implement the decision 6. Evaluate the decision: does it resolve the dilemma? P = policies: is it consistent with my institution’s policies procedures and guidelines? L = legal: is it acceptable under the applicable laws and regulations? U = universal: does it conform to the universal principles / values my organization has adopted?
