Presented by Ian Harper (Executive Officer ASENZ)

ASENZ and the Social Services Industry Training Organisation have developed a strategic partnership to reintroduce the National Certificate & National Diploma in Employment Support We also developed a working relationship with Tautoko Services as principal training providers Our intention is to build the capacity and capability of the Supported Employment sector, so that the following outcomes are achieved...

1. SSITO will have registered Assessors from various SE agencies throughout NZ 2. ASENZ will have provided training programmes relating to the Certificate and Diploma in Employment Support, initially facilitated by Tautoko Services Trainers 3. These programmes will also involve suitably trained and skilled people from within the industry as co-facilitators

4. A year by year increase in NZQA approved trained SE consultants (Certificate or Diploma) 5. A process for on-going training for the industry commencing after orientation 6. The potential for SE staff to develop their careers as assessors, trainers, facilitators, programme developers etc

Certificate students = 30 Diploma students = 7 Assessors = 7 Trainers/Facilitators from within the industry = 3 One Certificate and Diploma programme in Auckland (Started February 2009) One Certificate only programme in Christchurch (Started July 2009) One Certificate only programme in Rotorua (Commenced July (2009)

The Diploma/Certificate programme consists of up to 10 modules presented as 2-day workshops The workshops run approximately 2-monthly Each workshop is designed to guide the participants towards completion of the unit standards that each one relates to (either Certificate or Diploma) There is an emphasis on the student undertaking their own learning and research activity

Each workshop is structured to be appropriate to both Certificate and Diploma students, however, the assessment requirements are different The National Certificate in ES is a level 4 qualification worth 80 credits It has to be completed within 14 months of the commencement date The National Diploma in ES is a level 6 qualification worth 124 credits It has to be completed within 18 months of the commencement date

At each workshop the students receive an assessment workbook relevant to the units they are registered for They are allocated an assessor and between them they set out a plan and timeframe for the assessment tasks to be completed The Certificate programme includes up to 3 elective units, these can be taken from the Diploma programme, thus reducing the amount of units required to go on and complete the Diploma

Students that obtain the Certificate in ES as part of the Certificate and Diploma programme will be able to register for the Diploma, using the “Assessment of current competency and prior learning” method Student that obtained the Certificate in ES through the Certificate only programme will be able to register for the Diploma in the standard way

SE practitioners will be able to enhance their careers by becoming involved in the development and presentation of future training programmes There will be opportunities for a variety of roles including: 1. Registered assessors 2. Assessment writers 3. Workshop developers 4. Workshop presenters/facilitators 5. Mentors/Supervisors/Coaches

A specific individual Supported Employment practitioner collective structure alongside the current ASENZ organisation membership set up Enabling them to develop their practice, gain industry specific qualifications and a “career pathway” SE practitioners actually leading and being the catalysts of their own future as professionals and for the future of the SE industry
