1 AFREPREN/FWD & Sotik Tea Company Regional Training Course on Renewable Energy and Biomass Cogeneration Technologies

2 Cogen for Africa Project UNEP/AfDB/GEF initiative Objective is to promote cogeneration (biomass-based mainly) in eastern and southern Africa Initial focus on biomass-based agro- industries but subsequent phases could include promotion of cogeneration in sectors that use other fuels To build on success of Mauritius & relevant elements of EC-supported Cogen Asia initiative Initial 6 year phase to cover 7 countries which have endorsed project (Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Sudan, Ethiopia, Malawi and Swaziland) – later phases could expand to other regions of Africa

3 Planned Cogen Installations 6 year project period Beyond 6 years 40 MW additional installed capacity of cogeneration promotion projects 20 MW pipeline projects 200+ MW additional cogeneration capacity

4 Cogen for Africa – Key Objectives Objective 1: Develop capacity of project developers, agro-industries, policy makers and financiers interested in cogeneration Objective 2: Promote and increase favorable financing for cogeneration investments Objective 3: Promote policies that are supportive of cogeneration

5 Training Workshop Objectives Provide best practices in cogeneration operations Share and exchange knowledge and expertise on overcoming technical barriers to cogeneration project development and operation Learn how to develop a bankable cogeneration project Identify cogeneration investment opportunities
