I. Jamestown (1607) A. founded by a joint stock company (London Company) to make profits for investors B. Unsuccessful search for gold C. Tobacco becomes cash crop D. Settlers: – 1. indentured servants – 2. freemen—received headright of 50 acres E. Anglican Church—established church F. House of Burgesses (1619)—1 st representative assembly in America G. Became a royal colony (governor appointed by king) in 1624

II. Plymouth (1620) A. Settled by radical reformers (Separatists) who rejected the King’s authority in religious matters – 1. fled England for the Netherlands – 2. Mayflower Compact (1620)—male passengers agreed to create a government for themselves a. town meetings—all decisions affecting the colony were decided by the Church members (direct democracy)

III. Massachusetts Bay (1629) A. founded by reformers within the Anglican Church who were persecuted for their religious beliefs (Puritans) B. formed the Massachusetts Bay Company and moved its headquarters to New England C. Great Migration (beginning 1630)—over 15,000 Puritans left England for Massachusetts
