Pass Criteria What do we need to think about when Planning for Major Incidents. 1.What type of Major Incident poses a Risk to us? This is very important because different major incidents effect people in different ways around the world. Risk assessments are done to identify what the risks are to the UK.
9
Risks Risks can be local, regional or national. They can effect people, environments, Cities or animals. Major Incidents have to be identified so as the Emergency services can deal effectively with the Major Incident. Prepared for it!! Think of some risks posed to the beautiful city of York?
10
Risks to the UK In this report you will need to choose two of these risks and go into lots of detail with them. Flooding of Rivers Disease and Virus Outbreaks Terrorism Winter Storms and Snow Coastal Flooding

Pass Criteria P6: Explain the main considerations when planning and preparing for Major Incidents. What do we need to think about when Planning for Major Incidents. 1.What type of Major Incident poses a Risk to us? 2.Can we Prevent the Major Incident from Happening? 3.If we can t prevent it from happening can we minimise the damage? 4. Who do we need to respond?
13
Example Answer 1. Flooding is a serious risk to the UK. Why is it and who would it affect? 2. Can it be prevented? Flooding is a natural event and so it is difficult to prevent. Flood defences can be put in place to prevent it or diverting rivers so as to send the water into other areas. Very expensive and would take a lot of time to carry out.
14
Flooding 2. If it can t be prevented can the potential damage be minimised? Yes! If we have good plans in place then the scale of the damage of flooding can be reduced. Having lots of sandbags for people, having the emergency services ready with all the appropriate kit and trained to use it. Make sure traffic diversions are put in place and evacuate areas quickly. Boats made available to get people out of areas and have food, water and shelter ready for people. Make sure diseases don t spread through medicine and drugs.
