Where we are going wrong You are not looking at the key words and phrases and analysing why the poet has chosen them and what this shows about the attitude of the poet to the relationship.

Layers The way poems work is that they use words and images that could tell you loads of different things about a relationship. Grace 1. Seemingly effortless beauty or charm of movement, form, or proportion. 2. A characteristic or quality pleasing for its charm or refinement. 3. A sense of fitness or propriety. 4. A disposition to be generous or helpful; goodwill. 5a. Divine love and protection bestowed freely on people. b. The state of being protected or sanctified by the favour of God. c. An excellence or power granted by God.

Analysis To get an A* you need to do the following: 1. Explain all the connotations of the image and the key words in the quote 2. Explain what this shows about how the poet might feel 3. Explain what this shows about his/her personality 4. Explain what this shows about the relationship 5. Make a link to the key themes

Task One Using the online dictionary I want you to use the online dictionary and write down all the potential meanings of some of the key words.

Task Two I want you to pick one image or line from a poem and write one paragraph answering the following question: How does the poet use language to show how they feel?
