Objectives : Recognize polygons Name polygons Recognize convex polygons Find diagonals of a polygon Identify special types of quadrilaterals 5.4
2
Plane figures Consists only of segments Consecutive sides intersect at endpoints Consecutive sides are noncollinear
3
Start at any vertex then proceed either clockwise or counterclockwise A B FC E D
4
convex – each interior angle has a measure less than 180° Example: a)b) For our class, we will be using only convex polygons unless the problem states otherwise. 5.4
5
diagonal – a segment that joins two nonconsecutive vertices 5.4
6
Quadrilateral: a four sided polygon Parallelogram: a quadrilateral with both pairs of opposite sides parallel Rectangle: a parallelogram with at least one right angle Rhombus: a parallelogram with at least 2 consecutive congruent sides Kite: a quadrilateral in which 2 pairs of consecutive sides are congruent, but opposite sides are not congruent * 5.4
7
Square: a parallelogram that is both a rectangle and a rhombus Trapezoid: a quadrilateral with exactly 1 pair of parallel sides Isosceles Trapezoid: a trapezoid with the non-parallel sides congruent 5.4
