2
Flagella & Cilia Flagella Cilia
Whip-like appendages of cells that are the main source of movement in Eukaryotic cells. Flagella 1-2 Long appendages Tail like appendage. Cilia Several short appendages. Usually lines the cell.
3
Structure Undulipodium – (9+2 organelle) Basal Body Plasma Membrane
Characterized by 9 fused pairs of microtubule doublets surrounding 2 central single microtubules Basal Body Cilia/Flagella grows from, and is attached to. Plasma Membrane Surrounds the flagella
4
Function The organization of Flagella/Cilia allows microtubule to slide against one another and causes a bending movement. This allows cells to do things such as swim, or move water across the surface of the cell. Examples Cilia
5
Diseases (Ciliopathy)
Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia Respiratory Tract, Fallopian Tube, Sperm Ectopic Pregnancy Male Infertility Polycystic Kidney Disease Retina Degeneration Situs Inversus Cilial function is responsible for the normal left-right asymmetry in mammals.
