1 Matter The 3 different states of Matter

2 3 States of Matter Solid Liquid Gas

3 SOLIDS What do you know about solids?
Can you list some solid objects in your classroom? What do you know about solids?

4 Definition Word Picture - definite shape and volume. 1. Solids
- Solids have their own shape. - particles - close together and slow moving. - particles = low energy

5 Liquids Can you list some liquids in your classroom?
What do you know about liquids?

6 Definition Word Picture - definite volume but not a definite shape.
2. Liquid - Liquids take the shape of their container - particles of liquids are farther apart and faster-moving than solids. - particles have more energy than solids

7 GAS What do you know about gas?
Can you list some gases in your classroom?

8 Definition Word Picture 3. Gas
- no definite volume and no definite shape. 3. Gas - spread out to fill and take the shape of their container - particles of gases are farthest apart and move most rapidly. - gas particles = most energy!

9 States of Matter Demonstration

10 Is this a solid, a liquid, or a gas
Is this a solid, a liquid, or a gas? Can you find more than one type of matter in any of the pictures?

11 Yes Yes Yes Yes Solid Liquid Gas Definite volume? Definite shape?
Characteristics Solid Liquid Gas Definite volume? Definite shape? Energy (high or low) Examples: Yes Yes Yes No – takes shape of container No – expands to fill container entirely Yes Low – slow moving molecules Highest – particles can actually move away from one another Medium – faster moving molecules Desk, you, chair, ice, computer, pencil, pens Liquid water, soda, Kool-Aid, gator-aid Oxygen, carbon dioxide
