What is Volume? Volume- the amount of space matter takes up. 9/27/2007 1

Volume can be measured. The volume for solids can be found by: Counting the cubic units in an object. Use a ruler and measure the length, width and height of an object. 9/27/2007 2 The rulers show the box’s measurements, which can be multiplied together to find its volume.

Units of measure for solids Scientist use metric units when they compare and measure the volume. Some metric units to measure the volume of solids: – Cubic centimeters (cm 3 ) – Cubic meters (m 3 ) 9/27/2007 3

Prefixes change the base unit into smaller or larger units.

Volume of Liquids Liquids do not have a definite shape. To measure liquids you use a measuring container such as a graduated cylinder. A graduated cylinder is marked with metric units called milliliters. Some metric units to measure the volume of a liquid: – Milliliters (mL) – Liters (L) 100 milliliters = 1 liter 9/27/2007 5

Volume of other objects A graduated cylinder can be used to find the volume of solids that sink in water. In class we found the volume of a large marble. The water level the graduated cylinder rose from 50 mL to 57 mL when the ball was added. The volume of the ball is 57 mL – 50 mL = 7 mL or 7 cm 3. 9/27/2007 6
