For homework turned in Monday There were 2 assignments. The paper on top has score for both assignments: 5 pts for Boyle's Law worksheet 3 pts for Gay-Lussak problems from book Total = 8

PV = nRT (R = constant which = 0.0821) P 1 V 1 P 2 V 2 n 1 T 1 n 2 T 2 = Combined Gas Law - conditions change Ideal Gas Law - only one set of conditions

STP means P = 1 atm T = 0.00 deg C Important relative: If gas is at STP 22.4L = 1 mol

3/14/2012 Standards: 4 (Gases & Their Properties) CAHSEE If you are in Periods 2 or 6, you will need to look at the whiteboard for 3/13

3/15/2012 Standards: 4 (Gases & Their Properties) Objectives: ● Comlete Mini-Lab - Disc. direct & inv. relationships P,V,n & T ● Be able to complete Boyle's Law lab on computer at home. ● Students will be able to use STP in their calculations. ● Students will be able to complete Extra Credit gas sim (see Labs) (30 pts) DO NOW: 1.If 852 Torr, and 85 g HCl, and 45 °C, what will the volume of HCl gas be in the vessel? Show your calculations for each of the 3 conversions as well as using PV = nRT or Combined Gas Laws. HOMEWORK: 1. Ch 14.3, 41-45 (5 pts) Std 4 ============================================================ STAMPS: ● Journal 3/14 1. Ch 14.2, p. 430 - PP's 22 & 23, p. 432 - PP's 24-28 (5 pts) Std 4 HELP for DO NOW Pressure must be converted to atm., g HCl must be converted to moles, 45 °C must be converted to Kelvins, and the value of R (a constant) is always = 0.0821. Then V will be given in L.

For today's quiz questions, first form groups of 4, then one person goes to get a responder to give the answers for each question and explain why the answer is correct.
19
1Why are the the pressure calculations coming out the same for molecules of different sizes? A molar mass is part of PV = nRT B they aren't, mass of molecule matters C lighter molecules hit side of container more often than heavier molecules, resulting in their exerting the same amount of pressure on the inside of the container D pressure of all gases is constant and doesn't change
20
2If you have 1 mol ea of 5 different molecules, how much more pressure (P) will the 5 exert together than only one? A 2 times more P B 5 times more P C this cannot be determined with gas laws D 3 times more P
21
3Does the molecule mass affect the pressure it will exert on the inside of the vessel it is in? Yes No
22
4Using PV = nRT, calculate the pressure of 1 mol of CH in a vessel of 30L, at a temp. of 100 deg C. (R = 0.0821). Round to 3 sig. figs
23
5Given the conditions shown, which gas law will you need to use? (problems from text) A Combined Gas Law B Ideal Gas Law p. 433 32, 33 p. 432

3/16/2012 Standards: 4 Objectives: ● Students will be able to complete Boyle's Law gas sim questions at home. ● Students will be able to use STP in their calculations. ● Students will understand how to use the extra credit on-line gas sim. and be able to ask questions about how to accomplish the assignment due 3/30 (2 wks from today) DO NOW: 1.If P = 705 Torr; V = 85 mL; T = 115 °C. Find moles of gas. 2. If the gas is methane CH 4, how many grams will that be? HOMEWORK: 1. Ch 14.2 PP's p. 437 41-45 (10 pts) Std 4 2. Do Boyles' Law lab at home using simulator on-line. Follow directions given on the sheet itself and instruction given in class today. NOTE - THIS ISN'T DUE UNTIL TUESDAY! (15 pts) Std 4 ========================================================== STAMPS: ● Journal 3/15 1. Ch 14.2, p. 433 29-33 (5 pts) Std 4 S TP – is code for P = 1 atm and T = 273 K Period 3 notebooks collected today Period 5 and 6 notebooks collected Monday
