T R A N S – E U R O P E – E L E K T R O T E CH CZECH EDUCATION SYSTEM - GLOSSARY BACK Grammar school (gymnasium) – school without any specialisation. Most of graduation students go on the university. The best pupils of first level primary school study at grammar schools with 8 classes. The secondary school – with specialisation, e.g. electrical engineering (=SPSE), mechanical engineering, business, health service … Vocational school – secondary school with specialisation. Studies are fixated to practical skills. Vocational school normaly have 3 class. If students want to study at university or tertiary college, they have to study 2 years more and then pass an school-leaving examination (as students grammar and secondary schools). Tertiary college – department of higher education (=VOS). Usually with technical or business specialisation. 3 years studies are orientated more practical than university.

T R A N S – E U R O P E – E L E K T R O T E CH BRANCHES OF STUDY AT SPŠE - GLOSSARY BACK Information technology – this branch contains two departments: Administration of Computer Networks and Development and Maintenance of Software Applications. Technical lyceum – branch between grammar school and technical secondary school preparing for studies at technical university. Curriculum contains many general subjects as mathematics, physics, geography and bases of vocational subjects. Electrical engineering – there are two main branches after common 2 years for all students of „classical“ electrical engineering: Light current and Heavy current. In the fourth year students may choose from several specialisations. School-leaving exam (maturita) – for all branches has five parts: practical examination, Czech language, foreign language or mathematics, 2 vocational subjects (e.g. for electrical engineering: electrical measuring and specialised).
