© VideoCentric Limited 2002 RADVision L2W-323 Gateway H.323 Addressing IP ADDRESS Endpoints may call directly to other endpoints using IP addresses or call indirectly through a gatekeeper. ALIAS Endpoints may establish a connection with other endpoints by using an alphanumeric alias which is translated to an IP address by a gatekeeper. E164 (Telephone Number) Endpoints may establish a connection with other endpoints by using a numeric value known as the E164 address. This must be translated by a gatekeeper into an IP address.

© VideoCentric Limited 2002 RADVision L2W-323 Gateway What is a Gatekeeper? A gatekeeper as defined by the ITU-T H.323 standards is an optional device that provides access and bandwidth usage controls for H.323 devices on an IP network. May also provide address lookup and translation, conference accounting, and site/conference status information. It is the key element in the network that allows endpoints to find other endpoints, gateways, and to joinmultipoint conferences

© VideoCentric Limited 2002 RADVision L2W-323 Gateway Gateway Connection - H.320 To H.323 MULTI-SUBSCRIBER NUMBERING (MSN) A single ISDN B-Channel can be assigned several unique ISDN numbers. When any of these numbers is called, the call will arrive on that channel. The called number will be contained in the setup message which can then be used to identify the destination H.323 entity. ISDN SUB-ADDRESSING When an ISDN call is made, an additional set of digits may be added to the end of the ISDN number. This is the Sub-Address and will be delivered to the destination channel with this information in the setup message which can then be used to identify the destination H.323 entity.
24
© VideoCentric Limited 2002 RADVision L2W-323 Gateway INTERACTIVE VOICE RESPONSE (IVR) & DUAL TONE MULTI-FREQUENCY SIGNALLING (DTMF) A gateway can receive an incoming call from an H.320 terminal and establish the connection autonomously. Audio information may be sent to the H.320 terminal which can then be controlled in a menu fashion by DTMF tones from the H.320 terminal - this can either lead to a connection being established with an H.323 endpoint via the menu or a gathering of DTMF digits that can be used to identify a destination H.323 endpoint. TERMINAL CONTROL STRINGS (TCS-4) This method, once again, requires the Gateway to establish an autonomous connection with the calling H.320 terminal. During the capability negotiation phase, the H.320 terminal can send a TCS-4 string containing information that can be used to identify the H.323 destination. Gateway Connection - H.320 to H.323
