Al-Anon Family Groups is a community-based mutual support program for the friends and families of alcoholics. It is open to anyone affected by someone else’s drinking. Since 1984, Al-Anon Family Groups’ World Service Office (WSO) has conducted a Membership Survey every three years. The 2006 Membership Survey is the eighth study. The findings are an aid to professionals, researchers, students, the media, or anyone seeking information about Al-Anon Family Groups. Methodology The study was conducted fall of 2006. A total of 139 Alateen member surveys were tallied. These surveys represent an estimated 945 Alateen groups in the U.S. Study results contain a margin of error of +/-3.4 at the 95% confidence level.

Key findings Professional recommendations continue to play a significant role in getting clients to their first Alateen meeting. Overall, Alateens reported that others’ drinking affected their mental health and well- being the most. Alateens’ reported that their health, well-being, and daily functioning greatly improved due to Alateen. Alateen members understand the importance of receiving treatment, counseling, or therapy both before and after coming to Al-Anon.

3 in 10 Al-Anon members have children under 21 living at home This data gives support for the need for Alateen and its potential to grow Potential to have 50,000 Alateens if there is just one child old enough for Alateen in each family that reported having children. Respondents under the age of 12 were less likely than older respondents to have received counseling before coming to Alateen. Those who have been members less than one year are more likely to have received some “other” form of treatment. Alateens who have been members for 3 or more years are more were most likely to report receiving medical treatment. n = 30

Closing remarks As reported by Alateens, participation in Alateen will likely improve the health, daily functioning, and mental well-being of those who are affected by someone else’s drinking. Personal recommendations are still the most important influence for members to attend their first meeting. Encourage Al-Anon members to reach out to their children and others who may benefit from attending Alateen. A third of Al-Anon members have children at home under the age of 21. This shows a lot of potential for the growth of Alateen. Current Al-Anon members should be encouraged to have their children attend an Alateen group.
