Developing and nurturing the collective power of people united by a common cause, for social and political change, in a way that recognizes and taps into the richness of their many differences, and creates both political agility and accountability. The power of numbers bonded by hope, explicit justice values and clear agendas.

2 What is needed to rebuild movements? Autonomous spaces for critical reflection and self- assessment Learning from past and present - multi-generational, cross-sector/ class/ caste/ race/ religion/ gender/ ability/ sexuality Risk-taking – to think and act ‘out of the box’ Concepts and theories for understanding power dynamics; explicit steps for building/using power Bridging perspectives: scholars-activists; grassroots- policy; individual-collective; radical-mainstream

3 What is needed to rebuild movements? (2) Political skills and capacity to develop/adjust strategies to fast-changing contexts; negotiate alliances Back to basics (empowerment and base-building) with exciting popular communications “Systematization”, documentation and broad sharing of experiences Democratization of knowledge, which builds stronger communication and mutual respect Bold, heartfelt visions that tap into the best of who we are as women and men; human beings
