The design process This is a series of stages that you follow throughout your D&T projects. You need to know the stages and understand what they are, it comes up every year in the exam. This presentation will take you through the stages and explain each one.

Design Brief This is a simple statement saying exactly what you are going to do in the project. At KS3 you will probably be given a design brief but at KS4 you will be expected to Write your own. The design brief should outline the major Factors in the project. Eg: I am going to design, make and evaluate a jewellery box To go in my bedroom. The unit should have space for earrings, Rings and necklaces as well as bracelets. The unit should be Small enough to fit on my bedside cabinet and should be modern In style to fit in with my bedroom. The jewellery box should be made within my budget of £15.

Analysis This is where you think of all possibilities to do with your project, the limitations and the options available to You. You need to consider things such as materials, sizes, Safety and cost amongst other things. The analysis is often in the form of a bubble/ spider diagram.

Research For this part of the project you need to gather information that will help you design and make your project. You could Find out things like: Finding out about different materials and their properties How to join different materials together How to form and shape materials Looking at similar existing products Asking your target audience questions Finding out important sizes It is important that you only include useful information. You Will not get marks if it is not useful to your project!!

Specification This is basically a list of things that your final product should fulfil. A specification could be divided into ‘Essential’ and ‘Desirable’ (the essential being really Important and the desirable making it better). It is also Important that all specifications are fully justified (you Give a reason for them). Eg; My table could have a drawer for storage that I could Keep my magazines in My Cabinet could have a glass door to display my trophies effectively

Initial Ideas You need to come up with a broad and imaginative range of ideas for what You want to make. All ideas should be labelled and should be clearly drawn Out. You don’t have to worry about details too much at this stage or how you Are going to make it. That comes at the next stage.

Development This is where you look at your best idea in detail and start To add more detail. You might change the way it looks, start Thinking about the way it will be made and generally add Enough detail so that it could be made. It is important that Development is done in a step by step approach.

Final Idea This is a final drawing of what you are going to make And should include all construction details and sizes. To go with a final design you should also have a working Drawing (a 2D orthographic drawing with sizes) and a Detailed cutting list (a list of all the materials and sizes You will need). The important thing to think about is you need to include Enough detail so that a total stranger who knows nothing About your design could make it.

Planning This is where you start to think about how you will make your project. You will need to consider how much time you Have, what materials and equipment you will need and how you are going to check that the item is of a good quality. You also need to think carefully about the order you will Make it in as if you don’t things can get really complicated. Always double check your planning with either a teacher or The technician

Manufacture This is where you actually make your final design. It is Important that you do not rush this stage and complete Your item to the highest possible standard. If your Planning is good this stage should go smoothly!

Evaluation Even though this is the last stage of the project Evaluation should be happening in all of your work (for example you will evaluate similar products, you will Evaluate your design ideas as you go along). At the end of your project you will produce a report Based on what you have achieved and you will also compare Your finished product against your original brief and Specification. You will also think about what you could have done better in your project and if you could change anything what it would be.
