USB Pen Design
2
You are being asked to design a USB Pen Drive
Design Brief You are being asked to design a USB Pen Drive Specification Your USB Pen must be fully functional. You must design & make an enclosure for the USB Processor to fit into. You must make a prototype model of your design prior to computer modelling and manufacture You must model the design in Inventor to allow the drawing file to be transferred to the laser machine. You must base all your ideas on a theme.
3
What is the theme? The theme will decided through using an idea generation technique called morphological analysis.
4
What is a Research Sheet ?
A research sheet is used to gather visual information on your area of design & the theme. It can include drawings & printed images that will: Help you understand what you are designing (USB Pen Drive). Provide imagery that will be used in your ideas (based on a theme).
5
Morphological Analysis
Research During the research phase of this unit, we will be looking at main areas USB Pen Design Sketching & Rendering Acrylic Morphological Analysis Outcome D1.6 Incorporating relevant findings of research in a design proposal
6
Research Task 1:-The USB Pen Drive
It can be beneficial to look at existing products to see what designs are already out there. Task: Using the internet research existing USB pens – don’t just stick to novelty designs as you may want a more ‘professional’ design. Collect 5 or 6 designs and write a little bit about each – what you like about the design, what you think it is made from, who you think would use it Learn: To use the internet as a research tool. To start to consider important design factors that influence a design .

13
Preparing a Research Sheet
Sort out all your collected images & drawings. Task: Trim images using scissors or guillotine. Think carefully about the size & shape of these images, they have to look good! Learn: To cut out neatly & accurately. To make good aesthetic decisions.
14
Research Sheet - Lay Out
Task: Begin to carefully arrange the images on your sheet. e.g. your renderings could be placed together in a group. Learn: About lay-out & composition. To make good aesthetic decisions. Finishing a Research Sheet
Task: Using Blue-tac, lightly stick down all your images. This sounds simple, but you have to stick them in the right place & without any mess! Learn: To organise & arrange images properly. To stick down images cleanly & securely.
16
Development Tasks During the research phase of this unit, we will be looking at main areas Morphological Analysis Simplifying Images Initial Design Ideas Justification Developing Ideas Choosing the Final Design Modelling the Final Design
17
Development Task 1 – Morphological Analysis
Create your own Morphological analysis table Learn: About using the morphological analysis to help create different design ideas. Outcome D1.5 Selecting and using idea generation techniques to generate a design proposal.
18
Morphological Analysis Morphological Analysis
Who? Age? Colour? Theme? Male 12 to 16 Red Sport Female 17-21 Yellow Hobby 22-30 Green Subject 30-40 Blue Animals Black Vehicles Pink Seaside Purple Space Task:- Draw a table with the four headings shown. Add in the additional information suggested colours and themes. You can add more of your own of you wish. Using the grid create 6 different combinations. They must all be different Eg Female – 12 to 16 – Yellow – Seaside Female – 17 to 21 – Black – Sport Male – – Green – Hobby Male – – Blue – Vehicle Female – 12 to 16 – Pink – Animal Male – 12 to 16 – Blue - Space Learn: How to combine areas of focus to help develop different ideas in the design process.
19
Development Task 2 – Developing Morphological combinations
Look at each combination created in the morphological analysis exercise. Research possible theme images using the internet – collect images that may be used to develop your ideas – remember to consider the other headings (ie age the design is for) Learn: How to consider the factors that influence each combinations. How to research images using the internet
20
Development Task 3 – Simplyfying Images
Using each of the images within the combinations, simplify them to make them easier to create in Inventor. You need to consider the outline cut and the engraved surface finish. Learn: Sketching techniques Consideration of manufacturing process on the design
21
Simplifying Images
22
Development Task 3 – Initial Design Ideas
On the grid given to you, sketch 6 different design ideas using the morphological analysis suggestions you have created. Learn: To use a theme to create design ideas for a product. To develop your sketching skills
