2  Branch of Biology that deals with classification and naming living things.  Aristotle classified living things into only two categories—plants or animals.  So why classify further?  It provides organization and identification for studying organisms.  Common names vary from place to place and many do not accurately define a species.  Example: jellyfish

3  Devised a system of grouping organisms into hierarchical categories according to their form and structure.  Binomial Nomenclature- system uses 2 names to identify an organism  Genus and species

4  Genus + species = Scientific name  Homo sapiens or H. sapiens  Drosophila melanogaster or D. melanogaster  Canis familiaris or C. familiaris  Carcarodon carcharias or C. carcharias

5  Used to be 5 kingdoms when Eubacteria and Archbacteria were one kingdom called Monera

6  Kingdom  Phylum  Class  Order  Family  Genus  Species

7  3 domains are above Kingdoms
