What is ENERGY STAR? A government-backed program that helps businesses and individuals protect the environment through superior energy efficiency. ENERGY STAR qualified products meet strict energy efficiency guidelines set by: –The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) –The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Through partnerships with manufacturers and utilities, ENERGY STAR delivers information to help consumers choose energy-efficient products and services. Saves money. Saves energy. Reduces pollution 2

ENERGY STAR Qualified Food Service Equipment Equipment Types: Steam Cookers Fryers ENERGY STAR qualified commercial food service equipment improves kitchen performance through: Shorter cook times Higher production rates Improved insulation High-efficiency compressors Source: Food Service Technology Center Hot Food Holding Cabinets Solid-door Refrigerators and Freezers 3

The Benefits To You?  High quality performance –ENERGY STAR qualified commercial food service equipment can cost the same as standard equipment. And, any additional cost is usually paid-back in energy savings within three years. –Qualified equipment uses less energy so it costs less to operate.  Save time and serve more – Qualified food service equipment has shorter cook times and higher production rates, allowing you to prepare more meals in less time. 4

Partner Network Why are utilities involved in promoting high efficiency equipment? –Many states require utilities to fund energy efficiency programs. –Helps reduce demand for power, slows need for new generation and transmission systems, and customer like it Why promote high efficiency food service equipment? –Food service industry is growing. –Untapped energy savings opportunities in kitchens. –Can target existing and new institutions. –Both gas and electric equipment is covered. 12

Available Product Rebates Rebates are generally directed at the end-user (kitchen operator) after installation. Many utilities offer rebates on ENERGY STAR qualified CFS equipment. Some of these utilities include*: –Pacific Gas and Electric (CA) –Southern California Edison –San Diego Gas and Electric (CA) –Southern California Gas Company –GasNetworks (MA) –CenterPoint Energy/Minnegasco (MN) –Arizona Public Service *As of January 2006 13

ENERGY STAR is: Developing on-line tools to increase awareness of and access to existing utility rebates. Fostering greater cooperation and coordination between utilities and manufacturers. Developing specifications for new CFS equipment types. Working with manufacturers to add new models to existing qualified products lists. 14 ENERGY STAR Support for CFS

Snapshot ENERGY STAR is: A government -backed program (www.energystar.gov) dedicated to helping individuals protect the environment through superior energy efficiency. Look for the ENERGY STAR on qualified ceiling fans. Saving energy reduces the burning of fossil fuels, which leads to less air pollution. This ultimately reduces greenhouse gas emissions that cause global climate change. ENERGY STAR qualified commercial food service equipment: Shorter cook times Higher production rates Improved insulation High-efficiency compressors Annual savings range from $60 - $1,000 (depending on the type of food equipment) Has lifecycle savings greater than 50%
