CH2M HILL’s Environmental Management System (EMS) Environmental Conservation in Leased Office Space

Measure What Goes In Environmental Management Systems (EMS) Traditionally measure “what goes out” Hazardous waste created in a production process Pounds of material recycled Energy used CH2M HILL’s Office EMS measures “what goes in” Amount of paper purchased Procurement contracts with environmental criteria How many offices comply with environmental work practices

CH2M HILL is breaking new ground when it comes to striking a balance between environmental stewardship and economic progress through new construction. For the last 10 years it has been a world leader in protecting the environment through smarter management of environmental impacts of its own operations as well as those of clients. In 2006, CH2M's North American operations implemented a broad effort for reducing waste, institutionalizing environmental practices, greening the supply chain, reducing carbon emissions, and measuring impacts. Watch for many more companies to follow suit. April 4,2007

Construction industry companies of all sizes are turning shades of green, implementing internal sustainability practices that range from recycling paper to building LEED- platinum headquarters buildings. They are driven by an assortment of ethical, economic and marketing factors, but whatever their reasons, the shift is resulting in a change in construction's workplace environment and attitudes…. While a 30-person consulting firm can fairly easily tally its waste, large companies, such as CH2M Hill, Denver, have to take a more complex approach just to analyze the issue of sustainability and then create a formal mechanism to manage it. EMS: What is it? An EMS is a system that: Incorporates people, procedures, and work practices in a formal structure to identify and address the important environmental impacts of an organization. Involves all staff as appropriate. Promotes continual improvement by evaluating environmental performance. Actively involves senior management in support of the program.
8
What’s an ISO 14001 EMS? ISO 14001 is the “formalized” standard – the only one for which a firm can register. Our EMS approach is modeled on ISO 14001 (“conforms”), but we have not been audited for “compliance” Do Target Implementation Training and Communication Document Control Check Monitoring and Measurement Recordkeeping Policy Plan Environmental Aspects Legal & Other Requirements Objectives and Targets Act Management Review ContinuousImprovement
9
How Does the Office EMS Get Done? Do Act Check Policy Plan Identify CH2M HILL’s environmental impacts: Aspects Establish, implement, and communicate goals for reducing impacts: Objectives and Targets Check progress towards targets: Measure Aspects, objectives, and targets are set annually in a collaborative process involving all EMS Implementation Team members and senior management
10
CH2M HILL’s EMS has Addressed our Day-to-Day Operations since 2005 Energy use in our offices Business travel and transportation Office supplies and equipment: from paper to furniture
11
Progress on Aspect 1: 2007 Reduce paper use per person by 5% 23% Reduction Establish recycling program in 10 affiliate offices All 10 Recycle Establish environmental procurement criteria on 30% of National Agreements 25% Established Increase recycled paper purchasing from 68% to 75% 73% Purchased
12
Recycling Accomplishments Electronic waste recycling in 2007 6,009 pounds: TechnoTrash 60,097 pounds: Dell ARS Number of offices participating in some kind of recycling or reuse program has increased from 75% in 2005 to 97% in 2007
13
Greening our Dollars Incorporating environmental criteria in all new solicitations and renewals. For example: Océ selected for wide-format plotter contract on the basis of their EMS and environmental performance. Océ recycles or reuses 95 percent of the equipment it takes back, and the equipment uses organic drums instead of selenium drums. Auto-start feature results in 50% less energy usage—and faster plots— because there is no warm-up time. 2007 25% of National Agreements have environmental criteria
14
Overall EMS Accomplishments Developed environmental guidelines: Paper selection guidelines for standardizing on recycled stocks Top 15 CH2M HILL Style Reminders, a companion to the CH2M HILL Style Guide applied to client deliverables Corporate Real Estate guidelines for office site selection and tenant improvements Duplex printing standards for offices

Aspect 2: Completed GHG Inventory based on Energy Use
16
Focus in the Future on What We Can Control and Measure North American offices Leased spaces, no direct control of facilities or direct measurement of energy use Headquarters Campus Full facility management and pay power directly
17
Aspect 3: Travel and Commuting Teleworking: We have a full-time program; piloted part-time telework program in Canadian region Green Travel: Environmental hotels rating available on our Travel page Video conferencing: Expanding this technology to replace regular face-to-face meetings Fleet vehicles: Working with vendors for more vehicle options and better maintenance Commuting to work (alternative transportation): Provide tax-deferred commuter spending account in U.S. and alternative work schedules
18
Aspect 1 Use of consumable materials and durable office equipment, such as paper, recyclables, office furnishings, and other products Aspect 2 Energy use for lighting, heating, cooling, ventilation, and equipment Aspect 3 Business Travel and Transportation Objective 1.1 Reduce office material usage and waste through reuse, reduction, and recycling Objective 1.2 Reduce environmental impacts by procuring environmentally preferable office products Objective 2.1 Reduce energy consumption and reduce greenhouse gas emissions Objective 3.1 Increase teleworking, thereby reducing commuting impacts, energy use, consumables, and office space. Objective 3.2 Reduce fossil fuel use and related greenhouse gas emissions. Teleworking Action Plan Green Meetings Procedure TARGET 3.1.1 Reduce the square footage by 5% per employee in 5 offices as a result of teleworking, and roll out a part- time teleworking program. Green Travel Procedure IT Collaboration Technology Procedure Fleet Vehicles Selection, Operation, and Maintenance Procedure Commuting to Work Procedure (Alternative Transportation) TARGET 1.1.1 Decrease paper use per person by 5% TARGET 1.2.1 Establish environmental procurement criteria for 30% of all national agreements TARGET 2.1.1 Reduce annual energy use by 5% per square foot on the Headquarters Campus TARGET 2.1.2 Reduce CO2 (greenhouse gas emissions) by 4% per square foot on the Headquarters Campus Headquarters Campus Energy Reduction and Carbon Offset Action Plan Paper Reduction Action Plan Paper Reduction and Purchasing Procedure for IT Paper Reduction and Purchasing Procedure for Publications TARGET 1.1.2 Expand eWaste recycling program to 85% of US offices Waste Reduction Procedure for Facilities/Operations Procurement Action Plan Purchasing Procedure for Procurement, IT, and Facilities/Operations TARGET 1.2.2 Increase recycled paper purchasing from 74% to 77% Environmentally Responsible Office Space Procedure (Selection and Tenant Improvement) Environmental Management It’s Good Business Electronic Waste Recycling Procedure for IT Electronic Waste Recycling Action Plan
