2 He was born January the 18th, 1849 in a town in New South Wales called Glebe. His full name was Edmund Barton. He was the first ever Prime Minister in Australia and was elected on the 1st of January 1901 until the 24 th of September 1903. When he became Prime Minister he was the leader of the Liberal Protectionist Party.

3 His full name was Alfred Deakin. He was born on 3rd August 1856 in Fitzroy In a suburb of Melbourne. He got elected 3 times. On the 24th of September 1903 until the 27th of April1904 then got re-elected on the 5th of July 1905 until 13th of November 1908 and then got re-elected on the 2nd June 1909 until the 29th of April 1910. He was in 3 different parties, the Protectionist party, Fusion party and the Liberal party.

29 Over 100 years ago on the 1 st of January 1901 there were 6 different colonies in Australia owned by the British. On that day the people voted to start something called federation. A federation is the coming together as a number of states, colonies or nations to form a new nation. Federation was about each of the Australian colonies being more like its own country. All of the colonies even had their own army. Before federation happened the colonies were controlled by the British. When federation happened on the 1 st of January 1901, it formed as the Commonwealth of Australia so they celebrated. There were 3 main problems that convinced people that federation was a good idea DEFENCE, TARIFFS AND IMMIGRATION. The states that were involved in federation were Victoria, New South Wales, Western Australia, Tasmania and South Australia which at that time had the Northern Territory added to it as well.

31 Robert Gordon Menzies was prime minister for the longest from the 10th of December 1949 until the 20th of January 1966 so he was prime minister for 17 years. Eighteen and a half years all up. He was born on the 20th of December 1894 and died on the 15th of May 1978. He went to a local school in Jeparit, Victoria and he went to Grenville College in Ballarat. He got married on the 27th of September 1920 in Kew down from the MCG in Melbourne to a girl named Pattie Maie Leckie. He had three children, Kenneth who was born in (1922), Ian who was born in (1923) & Heather who was born in (1928) His dad and uncle were both politicians.

32 He was from the Kooyong electorate. He wasn’t liked and was forced to resign in 1941. He retired from being Prime Minister and from parliament in 1966. Menzies enjoyed public celebrations, mostly those who assisted with opening new buildings, and launching new projects such as his opening of the centrally located Lake Burley Griffin in 1963. In 1965 he decided to send Australian troops over to Vietnam, to fight with the USA and South Vietnam troops against North Vietnamese Forces. On the 20th of January he retired from parliament. When television started in 1958 he was one of the first politicians to try it out to get more votes.
