Anthropology takes a holistic approach Examines environment, family, language, dress, etc. Goal: to find typical characteristics of human populations Etic approach: culturally neutral Emic approach: culturally biased

Fields of Anthropology #1 Biological/Physical Studies the emergence and evolution of humans Explores how and why humans vary biologically

Field #2: Archaeology Reconstructs history for societies lacking a written record Deals mostly with pre-history

Field #3: Linguistic Anthropology Studies the evolution and structure of languages Explores the changes and variations of language over time and location
