Part One: About Adam Grant Horne Adam Grant Horne was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on the first of January 1831. His parents were Henry and Janet Horne. He was christened the next year on the 30 th of January. I think this is a photo or a portrait of Adam Grant Horne

More on Part One His childhood was spent in Kirkwall in the Orkneys. When 1850 came around he got on the ship “The Tory” to get work at “The Hudson’s Bay Company.” He arrived in Vancouver in May 1851.

Part Two: Adam’s life in Canada Adam worked as a “trader” and a clerk for the Hudson’s Bay Company in Prince Rupert. He explored the island, his first trip was in 1853. More about his trips

About His Trips Horne observed aboriginal’s way of life and battles more than once on his trips. On his first trip he paddled up the Qualicum River as well, he watched the Hadia tribe.

More About His Life On the 22 nd of February 1859 Sir Adam Grant Horne and Ms Elizabeth Bate were wed. They had one child called Sarah Maria Simpson. I am named after her.

A little bit about Elizabeth Bate Ms Elizabeth Bate was from Dudley, England. She came to Canada with her brother and sister Lucy and Mark. Her brother was the first mayor of Nanaimo City. I think this is a portrait of Mark Bate!!!

Some places and jobs that Horne went to or had Horne went to Comox once to work in a small store. He stayed there for ten years. In the year 1878 Horne left his post at the Hudson’s Bay Company after he had worked with them for 27 years.

More He started his own store for the 2 nd time. The store was called “A.G. Horne and sons.”

What was named after Horne There is a lake named after Adam Grant Horne. There are also the Horne Lake Caves that are named in his honour. You are able to go caving in the Horne Lake Caves!!!!

What was Named After Horne There is also the Horne Lake Trail that is named after Horne. As well and Horne Lake Road. He also named a son is his father’s and his name. The son was named Adam Henry Horne.

Death Dates Adam Grant Horne died on the 9 th of August 1901. Elizabeth Bate (or Elizabeth Horne) died the following year (1902) on the 6 th of July.

Extra Info I learned that Janet Grant’s father’s name was James Grant. I don’t know her mother’s name though. I don’t know Henry Horne’s mother or father either.
