D AILY S CHEDULE Morning Meeting Reading (Science/Social Studies) Recess/Fruit Break Writing Workshop Lunch/Recess Math Handwriting Special (Art, P.E., Music, LRC)

Social – Emotional Learning Greeting Each student is greeted and practices greeting another classmate each day. Activity This allows students to learn about their classmates and practice cooperative learning skills. Share Students who share practice their public speaking skills and share events from their lives outside of school. All other students practice good listening and responding conversation skills. Morning Message This is a time for students to practice some academic skills and get a preview of the school day. Morning Meeting

Social – Emotional Learning Second Step Lessons Zones Taught during Morning Meeting Teaches students how to share, take turns, and control their body. Students participate in discussions and role-play to find solutions to problems. Taught by Ms. Gorman (School Psychologist) Lessons focus on identifying emotions and knowing what to do when feelings arise. Sorts feelings into zones: Green, Yellow, and Red

MAP T ESTING Students are tested three times a year. Focus = Growth! Use the data (with teacher observations) from each test to form groups for reading, writing, and math!

R EADING O VERVIEW Whole Class Instruction Comprehension, Sight Words, Choral Reading Activities, and Vocabulary Guided Reading Groups Phonics, Reading, and Comprehension Practice Word Work Students work with words at their instructional level each day. Daily 5 -Independent Reading -Partner Reading -Word Work -Work on Writing -Read with the Computer

F RUIT B REAK G UIDELINES Fruit or Vegetables Easy to Eat Easy to Clean-Up NO items that require a spoon please!

W RITING W ORKSHOP Independent Writing: Students practice the skill they learned in their own writing. The teacher works with individual students or groups of students to support students’ growth. Share: Two to three students share what they practiced during writing. Lesson: Focuses on teaching a new writing technique, grammar skill, or the editing process.

L UNCH AND R ECESS All leftovers will be returned home. Pack only what your child will eat. Talk to your child about eating during lunch.

M ATH D AILY 3 Math With the Teacher We will use MAP data, and observations to place students into smaller math groups based on what they are ready to learn. Most of the time groups will work on the same skill, such as addition, but at different levels. 1 st Grade students will work with both teachers throughout the year. Math By Myself Students will work on independent practice activities to help them solidify their known math skills. Students will practice using IPAD apps (IXL and Happy Numbers), practice sheets, and games. Math With Someone Students will work with a partner to practice math skills they are learning. Students will practice by playing games and solving problems together.

S CIENCE Unit 1 Plants Students will observe plants grow and plant their seeds. Students will learn science vocabulary Students will record their findings in a science journal Unit 2 Pebbles, Sand, and Silt Students will observe the similarities and differences in a river rock mixture The students will observe and sort earth materials based on properties Unit 3 Solids and Liquids The students will experiment with different solids and liquids The students will be able to decipher between solids and liquids The students will learn related vocabulary

S CIENCE Butterflies and Moths The students will learn about the life cycle of a butterfly and moth. The students will watch the different stages of a butterfly. The students will learn related vocabulary

S PECIALS P.E. Students must wear gym shoes to school. Every Thursday and Friday ( 1B) Every Monday and Tuesday (1J) Music Once a week LRC (Library Resource Center) Students will check out books. They will be sent home and must be returned the following week. Art Every other Thursday

H ANDWRITING Separate from Writing. Handwriting focuses on creating letters and numbers accurately and with precision.

D ISMISSAL Change of Pick-Up Procedures Written Note Phone Call to Office Students are dismissed at 2:55

H OMEWORK P ROCEDURES Math Fact Practice Borrow a Book (20 minutes of reading each night!) Word Wall practice Spelling test practice Charge your IPAD

IPADS! We are thrilled that we will have 1-to-1 IPADS this year! Support Please leave your charging cord at home and charge your IPAD every night! Please put apps you download at home on a different screen. We will use the home screen for apps we use at school.

R EPORT C ARDS Quarterly Parent-teacher conferences are 1 st and 2 nd quarter only Grades are gathered from observation, tests, note taking, and work samples All math tests will come home. Please look over them and discuss it with your child. Then sign and return them to school the next day so we can keep them for our records. All tests will be given to you at conferences to keep.

H OUSE K EEPING Birthday Celebrations Due to many food allergies, you can bring in a small trinket to celebrate your child’s birthday (pencils or stickers). Your child will pass them out at the end of the day. Bathroom Procedures Your child will be able to use the bathroom once in the morning and once in the afternoon. Please write a note or speak to us if your child needs to use the restroom more than this.
