Ideas to help you practice math skills at home….. Review papers that come home nightly. Ask your child what the directions were, have them explain quickly how they got the answers. Practice counting money, telling time, quick recall of addition and subtraction facts. Small little doses work great as a review.
17
Fun games to play Flashcard races Place addition and subtraction flashcards face down around a room. Set timer and race to see how many you or your child can turn over and get correct. Race against each other. Game can also be used with coin identification, vocabulary, etc.
18
Change Jar * Allow your child to reach into a jar or cup that holds extra change. If they can count it correctly, they may keep the change. Have them decide about buying something and determining how much more money they will need, or how much change they will get back once they buy the item.
19
* Look for shapes everywhere. Play who can find the shape first while you are driving, waiting for an appt., etc. *Make up story problems and have your children solve them. Ex. Molly is going to the store and sees some shoes that she likes. She buys a pair of red shoes and a pair of blue shoes. How many shoes does she have in all? *Estimate when you can. Show a container of an object and ask your child to make a reasonable guess as to how many are in the container. The goal is to make a REASONABLE guess.
20
Measure in the kitchen using cups, pints, etc. Allowing your child to help you make a recipe will allow them to show you how well they measure and it will allow them to practice using what they know.
