Reading n Harcourt Trophies is the core for Kyrene’s reading program. n Includes daily practice of phonics and direct reading instruction. n Guided reading instruction that meet the needs of each students reading level. n Individualized reading books n Chapter books n Skills taught: n Phonics n Comprehension n Retelling n Summarizing n Vocabulary n Phonemic awareness

Language Arts: Writing n Students will create, research, write, conference, share and publish their writing. n Six traits; organize, word choice, ideas, fluency, voice and conventions. n Writing genres for third grade are friendly letter, personal narrative and creative story. n Grammar, Spelling

Spelling n Weekly spelling tests on Friday. n Spelling words written in agenda on Mondays. n Responsible for studying words at home throughout the week. n Words will be given based on the students needs. n Vocabulary, invest in a children’s dictionary. n Spelling words are from our reading program the Harcourt Trophies. n

Math n Investigations—Manipulative Math n Scott Foresman/Addison Wesley n Leveled Practice (Foresman/Wesley) n Mountain Math n Concepts taught in multiple ways n Hands-on activities (Investigations) n Homework-daily and will be what was taught in class that day. n Practice math facts at home (x, /, +, -).

Handwriting D’nealian method is used. Students will learn printing and cursive. Handwriting can be reinforced at home.

Homework *Daily homework given (M-Th) 4 days a week, and will be due the following day. Thursday’s homework is to study for test (s) on Friday. *Students will be expected to read 20 minutes or more each evening. Then have parents sign the agenda that your child read. *Family Journal *Monthly Book Reports

Extra Information n *Friday Envelope; Progress Report, and class news letter. n *Send a note if your child is leaving early for the day and if the end of the day transportation changes. n *Healthy snacks brought in daily by each student n *Let me know of any family changes. n *Scholastic Book Orders. n *Art Masterpiece & JA (Junior Achievement) parents needed for our class.
