3 A Model for Accessibility Developed for Center on Disability Studies at the University of Hawaii to look at the inclusion of individuals with disabilities in all of the projects, programs and events that are sponsored by the Center provides project directors, faculty, students and staff with guidelines for ensuring that individuals with disabilities are truly represented in the work that we do

5 Key Points Using respectful language; Confidentiality; Access guidelines, including guidelines for websites & print, hiring, research, and conferences & meetings, and Proactivity.

6 Appendices Include converting to Braille, print and tape formats, responsibilities as an employer under the ADA, customer service practices and individuals with disabilities, using TTY or Relay Services, an accessibility checklist and, set-up requirements for meetings.

Developed as the CTE publication, “A Climate of Respect: A Handbook for Teaching at the University of Hawai`i at Manoa” did not provide any information on disability-related issues. Currently used as companion to the Handbook

11 Highlights Provides an eight point Guide for Instructors in Working with Students with Disabilities Offers tips for Postsecondary educators on –etiquette, –universal design, –confidentiality, –rights and responsibilities

12 Highlights Describes various disabilities and their considerations –Students with Learning Disabilities –Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) –Students with Autism –Students Who Are Visually Impaired –Students Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing –Students with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder –Students with Mobility or Medical Impairments –Students with Psychiatric Disabilities
