Math Practice #2 Reason Abstractly and Quantitatively

Write down any questions and/or concerns you currently have in regards to math on a post-it note and place it on the poster in the back of the room. These will be addressed later in our session.

Math Practice #1 Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. What did you do? Take 2 minutes per person and talk about what you did this past month to incorporate mathematical practice #1.

Problem Solving You will be given 5 minutes to come up with a solution to a given word problem.

 Each group is assigned one question.  Groups will be given 5 minutes to discuss and write down all ideas and possible solutions on poster paper.  Groups will present their ideas to the class. Collaborative Groups Common Core Teaching Practices

Individual vs. Discussion Which way was easier? Which way did you feel more confident in your math? Why? Do you allow both of these ways to happen in your math class? Why or why not?

Math Practice #2 Reason Abstractly and Quantitatively

Key words for Math Practice #2 1)Decontextualize – break it apart 1)Contextualize – put it back together 1)Attending to the meaning of quantities, not just computing them. 1)Use flexibility.

Let’s look at teaching styles US http://timssvideo.com/80 Japan http://timssvideo.c om/49

Similarities and Differences What were some things you noticed about the US lesson? What were some things you noticed about the Japan lesson? What were the room arrangements? What types of math problems were students completing? How many? Were there opportunities for students to share or discuss?

Big Ideas  It is NOT about groups and independent work as much as it is about about sharing mathematical thinking.  It is less about skill problems and more about conceptual problems.  These sessions are only beneficial if you try to implement something when you get back to school. Remember your homework!

QC 2 Let’s discuss our questions, comments, and concerns.

Inside Outside Circle  How do math practice 1 and math practice 2 relate to one another?  What is one thing you learned today?  What is one thing you plan on implementing in your class this coming month.  What is one concern you have about what we discussed today?
