1 Mentoring 4 Reading Achievement 2014-2015 Supported by the Ohio Coalition for the Education of Children with Disabilities January 9, 2015

2 3 rd Grade Reading Guarantee & M4RA  Ohio's Third Grade Guarantee ensures that every struggling reader gets the support he or she needs to be able to learn and achieve  M4RA can provide the extra support students may need to become better readers  M4RA can help schools meet Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for their subgroup of students with disabilities- 62% of the school districts in Ohio did not meet AYP

3 Why 1:1 Reading Mentoring?  Schools or organizations can improve reading success for students needing 1:1 intervention by:  Using www.readinga-z.com materials that are engaging to both students and mentorswww.readinga-z.com  Providing mentoring materials addressing the National Reading Panels 5 Big Ideas for reading instruction: Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary and Comprehension  Offering supplemental mentoring materials at each student’s reading level and pace (Kindergarten through 5 th Grade reading levels)  Providing mentors that care for the reading success of each student they mentor. Bluffton University requires their Phonics students to mentor in area schools.

5 Why M4RA 1:1 Reading Mentoring?  Any school or organization that implements M4RA can:  Improve reading for their students reading below grade level when implemented 4 X per week  Engage families, older age students, community members, etc., in the reading achievement of their students  Afford the annual license fee of $79.95 for www.readinga-z.com www.readinga-z.com

6 Why 1:1 Reading Mentoring?  M4RA utilizes:  An evidence-based model of 1:1 mentoring using the scripted www.readinga-z.com Tutoring & Mentoring Packs. This model not only improves student’s self- confidence but also promotes month for month reading level gainswww.readinga-z.com  Supplemental 30 minute mentoring sessions 4 X per week for students who need 1:1 reading mentoring. Reading content begins at Alphabet through 5 th Grade. A student may have as many as 4 different mentors.

7 Why 1:1 Reading Mentoring?  Expert tutoring  “…Is one of two research findings that have been included on the United States Department of Education’s list of “Gold Standard” findings. 8 Who Can Benefit from 1:1 Reading Mentoring?  Any student reading below a beginning 6 th grade reading level can participate:  Before, during, or after school model  Summer school program  Community program  Take home packs for parent engagement

9 Expectations of the Program Coordinator(s)  The Program Coordinator will:  Make copies of Reading A-Z’s Tutoring & Mentoring Packs for students  Identify students and their current reading levels  Create student mentoring folders based on individual student’s reading level  Identify mentoring times and then recruit mentors  Train mentors to become “expert mentors”  Communicate with stakeholders

10 School or Organization Commitment  Serve students who need 1:1 reading intervention  Complete and return the M4RA End of the School Year Report  Involve families and community members, including senior citizens, for optimal reading success
