4 I MPORTANT C ONTRIBUTIONS Lungs were bad every Winter Broke national high school records Real name is J.C He was on the Ohio state sports team His team was nicknamed the Buckeyes His nickname was Buckeye Bullet He was one of the world’s greatest track and field athletes Jesse Owens was given many honors in his life In February 1979, President Jimmy Carter gave Jesse Owens an award in the White House President Carter said, “he has always helped others reach for greatness.” Jesse Owens died of lung cancer on March 31, 1980, in Tucson, Arizona He died when he was 66 years old

5 O THER I NTERESTING F ACTS W E L EARNED He broke 5 world records Running helped Jesse run faster and grow stronger At Berlin Olympic games, Jesse earned 4 gold medals in the 100 meter jump Jesse broke 5 national high school records and tied another He ran dashes, and did high jumps, and long jumps He wrote a book called Black Think In the book, it said that African Americans did not get ahead because they did not want to Many people did not like his book and wrote angry letters to him In 1979, he wrote a book I Have Changed. In that book, he apologized for some things he said in Black Think
