Heterogeneous Aqueous Solutions
Section 17.4
2
After reading Section 17.4, you should know:
The difference between a suspension, colloid, and solution How to describe the Tyndall Effect
3
Suspensions Mixtures from which particles settle out upon standing.
Heterogeneous Particle size ~ 1nm Example – sand and water or muddy water
4
Colloids Heterogeneous mixtures containing particles that are intermediate in size between suspensions and solutions Particle size 1nm – 100nm Cloudy or milky in appearance Examples: gelatin, smoke or whipped cream
5
Colloids demonstrate the Tyndall Effect – scattering of light in all directions
6
Emulsions – colloidal dispersions of liquids in liquids
Will cause a polar and nonpolar substances to mix
