1. CHANGES IN RUSSIA Why 1917 is an important date

2. An Allied Nation ► Russia was fighting for the allied Powers during WWI, but had to drop out. Why ?  Lack of Industry ! ► Great public outrage soon developed, fearing his life Czar Nicholas II gave up his rule.

3. A Revolution begins ► In March of 1917, large numbers of Russians led a revolt in the Russian Capital City of St. Petersburg ► A once exiled revolutionary leader named Vladimir Lenin returned home to his nation and spoke of change.

4. A New Government, Temporary at First ► Soviets (councils of workers and soldiers in Russian cities) were set up ► Vladimir Ilych (V.I.) Lenin and friend Leon Trotsky formed a revolutionary political party called the Bolsheviks.

5. The Bolsheviks ► Followed the ideas of Karl Marx ► Lenin and Trotsky ‘altered’ Marx’s ideas to fit the Russian situation ► The Bolsheviks called for Peace, Bread, and Land ► The Bolsheviks decided to change the name of their party after Marx’s book. They decided on what name ? ► The COMMUNIST Party.

6. OUT OF WWI ► The Communist Party believed in drastic change. After being embarrassed while fighting WWI, people believed in them. ► The Communists signed the Treaty of Brest Litovsk that officially withdrew Russia from WWI.

7. RUSSIAN CIVIL WAR ► RED ARMY ► Supporters of Lenin ► Killed former czar Nicholas and his family ► Defeated White Army. ► WHITE ARMY ► Supporters of a czar.

8. Major Changes ► Lenin adopted the new communist symbol to represent the worker (Marx’s Proletariat) ► Therefore, a hammer and sickle used.

9. New Government and Economy ► No longer a Monarchy ► The new government was a dictatorship ► Led by Lenin. ► A new form of socialism called a Communist economy ► Reshaping Marx’s idea’s.

10. A new Name and Flag ► No longer called Russia but... ► UNION OF SOVIET SOCIALIST REPUBLICS ► U.S.S.R. (C.C.C.P.) ► SOVIET UNION
